1931 Wide Bed Pickup Cowl band
We just got a new Cowl Band for this pickup, bright, shiny polished stainless steel. My customer tells me it should be painted! Before I scuff it and prep it for paint I want to make sure he is correct? Much easier to scuff than to Un-Scuff if he is incorrect. Also, if painted should it be Black or Body Color. He said he thinks body color is correct. Again, Thanks to all for your help. Don

You could be correct? Will be interesting to see what others say. Hard to tell from pictures on the internet. Most of the ones restored are done more by "owners choice" than by originality. Why do it wrong when it is just as easy to do it right??

Re: 1931 Wide Bed Pickup Cowl band
The cowl band was originally painted body color . I would test fit before painting because if it is a reproduction cowl band it may not fit properly and need some work to make it fit if it will fit at all . Norm

Thanks for the tip to test fit, typical repro! Logically, I think body color makes the most sense. The commercials bodies were made more for utility than beauty. It is probably more likely that they were assembled as completely as possible and then painted as a complete body unit.

I didn't think to look at judging standards. So many updates I stopped getting the new ones. Mine are dated 1989, but sure enough page 15-1 says the cowl band was painted body color! Thanks again. Like The Rolling Stones said, paint it black.

As others have posted, cowl band should be body color. IIRC, originals are plain steel, not stainless. AFAIK, they are not reproduced in that metal and are hard to find. |
