That coating is indestructable, the most perfect coating made by man. Enjoy the ride.

Re: Had my rims power coated
Use the plastic garbage bag method. Place a garbage bag on the rim, then press the tire onto the rim. The slippery double layer of plastic allows the bead to easily slip onto the rim.

On the other hand, if the tire is old, you are generally in for a "fight". . |

Re: Had my rims power coated
Ford guy 2-were you asking how to put the wheels on you car without scratching them when you put the lug nuts on? Good question. After power coating mine on my huckster, I just tried to not get the lug wrench to close to the wheel. Otherwise it is hard not to at least scratch them a little. Guess a person could put some kind of felt washer around the lub nut to keep the wrench away. Anybody have any other good ideas?

Re: Had my rims power coated
Brent is right on. I suggest you also use BABY POWDER. Put an ample amount in the tire before mounting. Roll the tire around so the powder covers everywhere inside the tire. You should be able to push the first bead on the rim by hand quite easy. Put a small amount of air in the inner tube and install it. Make sure the valve stem is in the hole in the rim. Note that the tube isn't in backwards. Last, with the help of the soap and water push the outer bead onto the rim. Air the tube/tire up; then remove the valve stem and let the air out. This will allow the tube to adjust in the tire. Re-inflate to 35 psi. All this should be done on a blanket, or rug. After you do your first one the rest will be a snap. Enjoy

Re: Had my rims power coated
I covered two boards with leftover carpet and attached them to sawhorses (easily removable) to make a platform for mounting the tires - really helps - is a lot easier than working on the floor or workbench.
I punched a hole in a plastic bottle cap so it slides over the lug nuts. Protects the wheel when I tighten the nuts. Not my idea - saw it in one of the Model A magazines. |

Re: Had my rims power coated
The manager at Les Schwab tires put mine on and did a flawless job .He used plastic protectors on the tire machine parts that touched the rim.

Re: Had my rims power coated
We're fortunate in Durango as there is an independent tire store that started in 1927 and they have the equipment and knowledge to mount tires on OE rims.

Re: Had my rims power coated
New tires on freshly powder coated rims went on easily for me. No irons and no plastic bags. I prefer to mount the wheel on the rear tire carrier which holds it solidly in position at a good working height while mounting the tire.

Re: Had my rims power coated
I'm with Fred K. I thought Ford guy 2 was asking how to mount the wheel on the car without scratching or chipping the powdercoat. First of all I would use reasonable care with the lug wrench and if you don't want to scrape the lug holes I would use the tapered washers under the nuts. The powdercoat is much tougher than paint and it shouldn't chip with normal care.

Re: Had my rims power coated
I think some of us interpreted the Question Wrong ( thanks Fred K )
Pete wants to know how to install the wheels (rims) without damaging the powder coating. |

Re: Had my rims power coated
I saw a tip in the restorer magazine to protect the coating by using a 1 gal milk jug cap. cut a hole in the middle big enough to go over the lug nut and put it between the rim and socket, lug wrench for protection.

Re: Had my rims power coated
How is that car ever going to look authentic without some lug wrench chips?

Re: Had my rims power coated
Using some dawn soap and water rub on tire rim and push metal rim on tire. It helps if tire is somewhat warm. I did that with my powder coated rims with out scratching them. They were laid on my garage carpeted floor. Used impact wrench with care to put on lug nuts.
