Default Smaller Diameter Steering Wheel

Is there a original looking steering wheel that is 16 inches or less?
Stock size for Phaeton is 17 or 17-1/2".
Looking for more room leg and belly room.

Tom , on my 29 delivery with F1 box I shortened the shaft & tube moving the wheel closer too the screen, It appears on some models the wheel is closer to the screen . like my Vicky with dropped dash mount was closer . A smaller wheel will make steering harder unless you fit a short pitman arm, as you have less purchase on the wheel, Just my take , regards Derek in a HOT NZ

Derek only gets the heat left over after we have already had it. 36C here today and 41 in Adelaide (750km) to our west. I reckon 41C (106F) is too much of a good thing.
Derek, more heat is coming your way.

I noticed that the '30-31 cars have 17" steering wheels while the '28-29 have 17.5" steering wheels. Can a '30 wheel be put on a '29 Phaeton?

I know 1/2" is not much but it could help a bit plus a little extra angle by installing a '30 steering column support and trimming/removing the original lower support.

I'm surprised that 16" wheels are readily available in the after-market.
Reduced diameter (-1") original looking steering wheels are available for 55-57 Chevrolets and 65-66 Mustangs.

You could always get a steering wheel adaptor http://www.speedwaymotors.com/1928-1...ntent=Speedway and then you would have your choice of aftermarket 3 bolt wheels in just about any size you wish, down to ~10" on up. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Shop/S...ering%20Wheels

I kinda like the 9 3/4" green metalflake one. Be a bitch to turn tho.

In Northern California we're looking forward to a possible storm of the decade. Heavy snow, rain, wind, etc. I'll be spending the day in my heated garage with my Model As. For me that's as good as life gets.

I quite like this one. Think it is available in a 15. Might fit on an old spline hub if that is what you have.

PS. It's cricket and tennis time here.

It's going to be -2 F here tonight. How about a couple hours of that, a lawn chair in a snow bank, and an ice cold case of Foster's ?

More often than not, the issue is the upholstery is incorrectly installed.

From what I have read previously the taper on this Speedway adapter does not fit the Model A steering column taper. I do know that taper on the Model A steering column is different to the later Fords

Changing from a '28/29 Steering wheel to '30/31 is a lot of work to gain 1/4". Remember the 1/2" is not the amount of room you gain but only 1/2 of it. 1/4 on the bottom and 1/4 on the top of the wheel. The important measurement is the radius not the diameter.

Currently -19C here, -26C forecast by morning. Can you send some heat up here please?

I lost 40 pounds so I fit better now. :-) It really easy if you set your mind to it.

I think maybe no one was game enough to say it.

I rolled a new 3/8" steel ring for the steering wheel I use in my '29 cabriolet to get a 16" diameter. I cut the old ring off and TIG welded the new one on, It took a while but I found a steering wheel caster to make a new rim for the wheel. I am happy with the results, but it was a long and rather expensive process to get what I wanted. The 16" size works well on the Model A and does not look too small or take too much effort to steer. I also have the shorter steering arm.

TomOKC: I sent you a PM about a week ago, no response. There's a "fat man" steering wheel for sale on the swap page.
