shifting NOT easy as 1-2-3
Shifting into 3rd gear on my phaeton has been a little touchy. Seems the disk is spinning too fast and I start to grind gears. From a dead stop to 1st then 2nd everything slides easy peasy ..... Now when in 3rd gear I hear a whirring sound and feels like she is stuck in between 2nd-3rd and even feels like a low gear.
Did something happen in the gear box with the shift forks or could this be a transmission issue ???

Re: shifting NOT easy as 1-2-3
So it changed? Or has it been this way? Shift early, don't wind up the engine in second, slip it out of second, wait two seconds, slip it into third. It SHOULD be easy. If your speeds are right, you really don't have to hardly push in the clutch. Keep the idle speed as low as it will idle consistently.

Double clutch. Forget anything you ever thought you knew about shifting. You are now dealing with an unsyncronized, 90-yr-old straight gear crash box. This is very early automotive development and engineering, Go slowly and listen to your engine and your trans. It’ll work, believe me.

Re: shifting NOT easy as 1-2-3
Also, Using the correct thicker 600W trans. lube will help shifting a bit. If you are using some of the thinner transmission lubes, I find it a little harder too get a good match on the gear speeds so as not to grind the gears when shifting.

The sliding gears have to slow down to match the next ratio. Riding in a friends Model A should help you with your technique. |

Re: shifting NOT easy as 1-2-3
Thanks for all the advice gents, I will need to take her out again and listen and feel more closely but I could tell you it does not happen every time I shift thru the gears but I do notice it feels strange.
Keith how did you get from Redwood City to Oklahoma ???
