Default Tool question

Hi Gents

I like using my Dewalt impact with the adapter for sockets. Unfortunately the adapter continually brakes. Anyone have a good brand name that can handle the challenge of impact sockets on tough bolts and nuts?

Get an impact with the 1/2" square connection integral to the tool, it will be much more stout. In my experience, Every extra connection, either adapters or extensions, lowers the effectiveness of the tool.

I borrowed a friend's 1/2" Craftsman 18v impact and it broke loose the 1 3/8" bolt holding the crank pulley on a 1937 21 stud crankshaft. I was impressed.

I'm not sure what DeWalt uses, but my experience with air impacts is you need specific impact tools, as in impact adapters, sockets and extensions. The ones I have owned and used are a dull black finish.

Sounds like you are using an impact driver with a 1/4" hex drive. A cordless impact wrench is what uses the direct fit 3/8" or 1/2" square drive anvils with regular impact sockets. It appears you exceed the designed torque for the 1/4" adapter for sockets. Not really designed for heavy use.

Good point Ronnie, I was thinking a heaver drive. For smaller nuts and bolts they sell sockets that have the hex drive as part of the socket. Should work fine for lighter work. I have driven lag screws with my driver.
