Default 1936 phaeton top brackets

Have seen pictures of cars with the brackets in the rear to hold the top irons when folded down, and some that do not have them. Bought a 36 and it does not have the irons that the top would rest on. Are they needed or will the top assembly rest on the curved back of the car? Thanks

Both the 35 and 36 should have the top rest brackets. The body is fitted with 2 brackets in each rear corner and the U shaped rests screw into the corner brackets. When the car is driven with the top up, you can unscrew the 2 rests and store them, I guess over the years they get lost or discarded.
I bought my replacements from Le Baron Bonney some years back, but I'm sure others like Mac's or Third Gen will have them.
Without these rests your top will fold down too far and the rear quarter panel paint will get damaged.

Is this also true for ‘38 convertible sedans?

A leather strap and buckle is threaded through the two slots to hold the folded top irons firmly in place. The brackets themselves were originally chrome plated.

When the supports are removed the treaded holes are obscured by the rear curtain. The part they screw into is a substantial casting screwed to the rear body rail.

Are these brackets / straps unobtanium?

The straps are available from Snyders in various lengths and configurations, likely one or more of which will do the job as leather is not exactly unobtainium.

The brackets were available through LeBaron Bonney years ago. Not sure who was actually making them though.
In regards to the question about the 38 convertible sedan, no they don’t require these. The convertible sedan top irons pivot inside the rear quarter and rests on the rear tub woodwork, whereas the phaeton pivots on the outside of the quarter and requires the bracket for support when the top is down.

Does Wescotts Auto possibly make them? @Karl Wescott can you please chime in?

Not according to his online catalog, but he does offer the late'35-'36 wind wing brackets (even though they are inaccurately described in his catalog).

Karl,

What you show in your catalog for wind wing brackets reflects a common misunderstanding. All of the so-called '36 windshield posts and wind wing bracket parts in fact carry 48-prefix part numbers, not 68-prefix part numbers as the were adopted in late '35 model production.

David you’re correct, and from memory the windshield staunchions also carry a 35 part number as well. Dan.

I do not make the 1935-36 saddles yet. (Sample needed).

The next edition of my catalog will show the “late 1935-36” interchange for posts and windwing brackets

Karl,

I know I have an extra saddle around here somewhere. When I finally find it, I'll send it to you to replicate.

Thanks to Jon, I have a sample to work with. Here are a couple of screen shots of the 3D computer model, I will be doing a 3D print tonight to compare with the original... so I can begin to make refinements as needed.

Computer modeling is done. Next step is to get wax/plastic models to foundry. Likely 3-4 weeks, then 6-8 weeks for the foundry to do their magic. I will update when models are ready to go.
