Re: Engine power
they sell cast plugs I believe in a kit form to repair such things, find a machine shop and see what they can do with it

Re: Engine power
Now, what make it crack?
Be sure to throw your torque wrench in the drawer, and just use common sense. If you use the steel rings, make sure the recess is deep enough so the gasket is tight before the rings are tight. |

Re: Engine power
a very interesting development indeed. Never saw a manifold crack there

Re: Engine power
Over tightened and cracked. I have seen it with aluminum "Hot Rod" A intakes.

Re: Engine power
Tom that is the B intake manifold. I do not think they had counter bores. What you see is the impression made by the steel part of the gasket.

Re: Engine power
I just finished resurfacing the old exhaust manifold with a spare A intake manifold. It took some time to get it lined up on the mill because the exhaust manifold was warped. I squared it on the mill using the middle two exhaust ports as a reference because they seem to be close to level. I had to remove 0.020" from the end exhaust ports. And there was a 0.010" difference in the top and bottom of the end ports. This is likely the reason for the crack in the intake when I torqued it down. Yes I should have checked the manifolds before I installed them but it was a pair that just came off an engine. They had been resurfaced a couple of years ago so I assumed they were OK. Bad assumption. A guy in the local club has a setup to bore the A intake to B size. I am going to ask him to bore it out for me. Then cross fingers and slap it all back together.

Re: Engine power
I've heard B blocks are prone to crack due to thin castings.
I wonder if your B intake was also thin and cracked easier due to thin castings? |

Re: Engine power
Here's a thought. We had a club member repair a water jacket crack in a B block was JB Weld and steel wool. Drove the car to Alaska and back that way. The intake manifold would be hot but not carrying combustion gases. Might be something to try, if you don't want the A manifold.

Re: Engine power
The crack is on one of the ears. I do not think JB weld would be able to take the torque.
But thanks for the suggestion. Bob Last edited by Bob Johnson; 08-14-2016 at 12:14 PM. Reason: spelling |

Re: Engine power
Brazing as an experiment to see if it works?
