Default Petcock

Hello.
When I drain the coolant of my 1937 v8-60, i just pull one of the lower radiator hoses. I have 2 petcocks on the engine block but they seems to be stucked and I have not dared to use force on them. As the picture shows, they have not been used for years. Is there a trick to free them? I guess I am just supposed to turn the paddle on the top, not the nut on the bottom?

sometimes they have to be taken apart, cleaned and lubricated with cock grease, a tube of it is $$ but enough to last a lifetime, Langs model T parts sells it.

i would bet that they are plugged up with rust and mud, might be more than you want to get into when you get started.

Might be better to simply replace with brass pipe plugs. Easier to get plugs in and out with wrench than turn a handle in that location.

Can you fit the tip of a propane torch in that space between the header and heat up the body of the petcock so you can unscrew it? Let it heat up and cool down several times. Apply penetrating oil. Be gentle.
By spraying a premium quality penetrating oil on your stuck bolt, you can reduce the amount of torque you need to apply by as much as 50%.

That is the 48- style pet cock first offered in 35. I too would not use it for many of the reasons above.

be careful trying to remove the petcocks, I have seen more than one that broke off and also have seen cracked blocks from trying to remove them

Thank you for all your response and tips, you are the best😊 I guess I just leave them alone , and just unhook the radiator hose . I am having trouble getting my newly overhauled water pump tight so I guess I have to drain it again🥲🥲 The v860 pumps are tricky…

Be veryful careful not to strip the threads re: water pump installation. Don't overtighten.

I was wondering when someone would catch this.

We are getting old.
