Default Valve Adjustment - 1932 Service Bulletin Model A and B

I have heard a lot of discussion about Valve adjustments on Model A and B engines. Attached is page 43 of the 1932 Ford Service Bulletin which addresses both. Note that the Exhaust Valve is .020" for Model B and .015" for Model A, and .010" for the Intake Valves for both, these are minimum using a go-no-go feeler gauge. Many Model A replacement or diamond blocks came with Model B camshafts.

These clearances might work with old style valves that were hardened steel, not stainless. New style valves need different clearances because of different expansion rates. I set all my Model A valves at ,011 intake and exhaust unless the grinder specifies differently. These old service bulletins will get you into trouble if you don't use the old style parts not new modern parts.

James,
Thanks for your input, I should have noted that when I follow the Service Bulletin clearances I am using a Standard Cam, Solid Tappets and Original Valves.

Note also that, unlike the model A, the stock Model-B cam had different lifts for the intake and exhaust lobes: 0.334 for the intakes and 0.339 for the exhaust lobes. The larger clearance would have allowed the valve to stay down a bit longer on the seat, with less chance of burning, meanwhile the greater lift evened out the resulting difference in volume flowed that might have otherwise resulted.
