29 2 Tooth Steering Column

Looking for a 29 2 tooth steering column restored or restorable. We are working on a 29 AA fire truck for a local volunteer fire dept. and would like to replace the original 7 tooth column which is badly worn. We do not want to restore the present column as it appears to be a waste of time and money. This is an open truck and removing the column is very easy plus we have to keep the original steering wheel. Will a 29 2 tooth steering box bolt up to the existing column? If this can be done then all we would need is the 2 tooth steering box.

I will bolt in but the steering wheel and horn rod will also need to be changed. The two tooth wheel is keyed while the seven tooth is splined. The seven tooth horn rod is longer.

If I find a complete 29 2 tooth box and column shouldn't the 29 steering wheel I have fit or do the late 29's use the 30-31 keyed shaft?

The early 29 2 tooth had a splined steering wheel like the 7 tooth. I think this was changed sometime in the April/May time frame. After that it had a keyed shaft same length as the 30-early 31 2 tooth. The tube had the 29 styled quadrant. Ford made a 29 styled keyed wheel for use with this shaft. The seven tooth units all used a multi splined wheel which will not work with a keyed shaft that the two tooth has. If you do not care so much for a completely original look, you could look for a 30-31 unit that includes a steering wheel. They are more common than 29 two tooth units and will bolt right in and work fine. This is a common practice for 28-29 touring class cars due to the scarcity of the 29 two tooth unit.

There's a good chance Bert's has a 1929 two tooth steering with or without the steering wheel.

It took me over a year to find a '29 2-tooth column for my CCPU. Get one when you can.

Why not rebuild the existing 7-tooth? It's not difficult, and I wouldn't expect the fire truck would get so much use that it would ever wear out again.

You have a guy named Barnes right there in Ct. that does a great job re-building 7 tooth steering boxes, sectors and all if a person wants. I don't have the number but maybe guys from Connecticut can chime in.

As far as I have seen the 29 two tooth used a single key not splined shaft. The wheels were the same style but the mounting was different.

The 7 tooth is welded together as one assembly where as the 2 tooth is built up.
Unless the column has cracks in it, I would agree that rebuilding the original to the fire truck would be a good way to go esp it you want to keep the original steering wheel. While there were posted several links to ebay ad's, I don't think there are a lot of proper 29 two tooths out there and unless they are restored could get costly to do so also also knowing what to look for that makes it a 29.
