Got an old K-D tool catalog ???
My dad has been gone 35 years and I am still discovering odd tools
hidden in the back end of the drawers of his tool benches. The latest one is this K-D #138. K-D does not list it any more and I have shown it to a dozen people with no results. The vertical portion in the back of the jaws is just a stick holding the jaws open. Thanks for any help. fd |

Re: Got an old K-D tool catalog ???
When I was a motor mechanic apprentice I worked at a Holden (GM) dealership & used a similar device to remove radiator hose clamps. The clamps in those days were often a thick spring steel ring with outward facing ends, we would simply squeeze the ends together & slide the "opened-up" ring back down the hose. It was quicker, easier & cheaper to cut a hollow pushrod in half & squeeze the clamp ends with that instead.

Tool # 138 is a Bulb Base Gripper. Description states it installs and removes light bulbs from tail lights, stop lights, turn signals, running lights on trucks, etc. Removes bulbs from corroded sockets. Plastic coated jaws permit soft, yet firm grip. Looks as though your pair has lost the plastic grips over the years. Hope this helps.

Re: Got an old K-D tool catalog ???
I have actually emailed K-D with a question on a tool and got an answer back in a few days on what it was. I thought it was pretty cool.

Re: Got an old K-D tool catalog ???
Thanks RAF.
I poked around in a small drawer that contained accessory pieces for a bunch of various tools and there I found two vinyl slip-on covers that fit my pliers and it now looks like your photo. I went up the old lane and found a truck with broken tail and clearance lights where-upon I removed three old bulbs and with the grips off took out 5 bulb bases. Great working tool. Guess I will now keep it. |

They (KD) also made a simple plier with C-shaped curved grippers meant to reach into a taillight cup or into a relector and grab the bulb by the brass base. I consider mine to be major goodies! I think Drake currently reproduces them.

Re: Got an old K-D tool catalog ???
Old thread but I'll take a chance.
I inherited pops stuff when he passed away and I've now had this KD no.2090 hanging on the pegboard for a couple of decades. Looks like it should slip over a keyed shaft for some reason. Anyone still have one of those old KD catalogs before Kline tools bought them out and dropped half their special tools???? http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/image/158933217 Thanks Denny Graham Sandwich, IL |

Re: Got an old K-D tool catalog ???
I'm at work, KD catalogs are at home...but I believe that is a Briggs and Stratton tool that goes where the flywheel attaches, so when you remove the flywheel to get at ignition you can rotate the engine to open and close points.

Re: Got an old K-D tool catalog ???
Thanks for the response Bruce. I'd really appreciate it if you could find a listing for it.
I've down loaded several KD catalogs that are posted on the web but most all are for automotive specific tools. Thanks for taking the time. Denny Graham Sandwich, IL |

Re: Got an old K-D tool catalog ???
Thanks a bunch RAF. As I said, I've had that hanging on the peg board for a
couple of decades. I do once in a while work on small engines, chain saws, blowers and mowers so now I know. Seems like that was the logical application for that tool, I just was curious if my guess was correct. Thanks again for looking that up and posting it. Denny Graham Sandwich, IL |

Re: Got an old K-D tool catalog ???
I've got a stack of elderly KD catalogs, including their little book on Flathead Ford valve work. I consider their Ford A-B and V8 valve tools to be better than the Plomb, Snap-on, and KRW equivalents...

Re: Got an old K-D tool catalog ???
Bruce, have you ever thought about scanning them and sending them over to
Keith Hardy at The Old Car Manual Project?? He's always looking for literature like that to share with all of us. A lot of guys would love to have access to catalogs like that for their research. Denny Graham Sandwich, IL |

Re: Got an old K-D tool catalog ???
Well, the excellent little Ford valve book (there were several editions of this) is already online at a tractor place:

Re: Got an old K-D tool catalog ???
Ah yes, still got some of my pops old flathead valve tools from when he was a
mechanic back in the 30's and 40's. Just suggested TCOMP because it's about the most complete archive of hard to find manuals/bulletins/brochures that's on the internet and Keith is keeping it going on voluntary contributions. Thanks for posting that valve manual. Denny Graham Sandwich, IL |
