Default Les Andrews: Trimming of Motor Mount Rubber

In the Les Andrews book he speaks of trimming the new rubber pads for the stock rear motor mounts. Its basically remove the three protrusions for the frame holes, and remove the entire lower flap. This trimming is apparently required to facilitate installation of the pads since they don't fit the frame properly.

Is this procedure still valid and required? I thought since the publication of the book the parts would have improved and this procedure would no longer be required?

The pads that I have came from Bert's and are listed as USA. Do these pads need the trimming?

I did not have to do any trimming on the rubbers from Mikes that I just installed. It was a snug fit, but felt good to me.

I trimmed mine, and it was still a tight fit -- 1/16" on each side.

That may depend on where you buy the rubbers. Some are correct, some are much too thick. The correct ones only have the dimples on one half.

Interesting. The new ones I got didn't have the "shelf" or L angle shape. The old ones didn't have it either and still seemed plenty fresh, so I reused them. Does the body sit on the shelf? I have a speedster, so I'm not sure how the original interacts.

Which book (1,2 or 3) and what page does Less talk about modifying the mounts. I'm at this point now.

I think it was brattons who had them correctly made - several suppliers stock thier properly made ones. I used a set and fit like a glove and engine slid right in with a hair bit of grease on the mounts to flywheel housing.

I hope Bert's was one of them. Their stuff is usually good, so no worries. I'll do my mounts this week...unless I keep procrastinating.

I'm sure glad I didn't just cut them like the book said to do. It really pays to hear the voices of experience on jobs like this!

My last 2 sets of rubber pads came from Snyder's and fit perfect.

NO...It is NOT Bratton's pads...As Tom says above...It is Snyders's pads that 1) are more plyable and not so hard, 2) they are slightly thinner than Brattons that make them lots easier to work with; 3) NO trimming on these Snyders Pads.

I recently installed the Snyder’s pads and had no issues either.

The "L" angle rests on the bottom rail of the frame and the mount is on top of that to provide a support besides the bolts.

The pads have been improved so the trimming is no longer necessry.

Hi Tom - I ordered with Tom at Snyders this morning- he is encyclopedic. You installed with no trimming, is there a trick to make the installation easier? I read Les's instructions, I had to read the part about pounding out the motor mounts a few times. Any tips? Thanks!

No problems at all, just lay the rubber pads on each side of the frame, then slip the steel sleeves in the centers of the rubber holes, then the motor mounts and bolts. The sleeves won't allow the rubber to be squeezed too tight.

I'm at this point now, but there is no way I have enough gap to install the parts like this. Frightening words like 'bent frame' run though my head, but there is no damage anywhere. There is some frame sag, but I don't think it would cause this problem...would it?
