Modern tire repair
I fully expect to meet up with this guy on one of my road trips some day when I need a tire repaired. He knows how to KISS better than anyone I've seen. And does vulcanizing with a passion like I've never seen. Love all the help he has at the shop too. Overhead's gotta be pretty low, if he has any at all. Definitely gotta get me one a them there tork renches.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeBOfD7R2G8 I think I have had one of his distant relatives work on one of my road trip flats already. Quite a sight to see.

Re: Modern tire repair
Thanks for that one. Vulcan the god of fire would approve. The third skill I learned at age 12 was disassembling a tire and tube that very way.
Except for good shoes. I felt I would have a heart attack. We never used fire as we had plenty of solvents and glues. Some (many) would light it up. We did not believe in it. The first skill was filling but not spilling a tank with a straight nozzle (no shut-off sensor). It was done by ear. Second skill was de-greasing scrubbing the grease bays each night.

Re: Modern tire repair
That fellow's method was a little more "basic" but it reminded me of how in the 1950's we use to valcanized the special inner tube and tire patches using an electric heat plate clamped on top of the patch. We got better results using the good-old glued-on inner tube patch or rubber plugs on tubeless tires.
Endless thanks to my Dad who made me fix my own bicycle flats. |
