1950 Mercury Hood Hinges
Hello Everyone,
The upper hood hinge on my 50 Merc broke and I am trying to find a replacement. It is the left side hinge, but I would be willing to buy a pair. I would appreciate if anyone could give me any leads. My initial search only name up with the rear hinges. |

Suspect that you are looking for a 'hood support' not a hinge.
Don't know of any source for one but what you may want to consider is restoring what you have. I have restored a couple over time. I have also seen lift gate gas lifts adapted to serve the same purpose.

Re: 1950 Mercury Hood Hinges
8M-16783 is the left side support assembly and the farther to the rear link & bracket assembly is P/N 8M-16797 for the left side. The support is what has the big spring on it. All of these parts constitute a hinge assembly for the left side. The 1949 thru 51 Mercs all use the same stuff.
Check the usual flea-pay then check the swap meet section and also check over on the HAMB market place. It's salvage yards and related club affiliates from there. |

Thank you everyone. Yes, you are right - it is the hood support that I am looking for.

That one inch square piece that the bottom of the spring attaches to is what broke off. Luckily it let loose when I only had the hood up a couple inches or I may have had a worse day at the ER. Sounded like a gunshot went off. Took me a while to find the spring which ended up in front of the battery. |

The worst part of restoration is to devise a way to re-install the spring.

Re: 1950 Mercury Hood Hinges
Thank you 51 MERC-CT
Maybe it is just the way that it broke off that made it appear that way to me. That would certainly make things better. I am taking it to my welding buddy on Monday. I have only looked at the small piece that broke off as I was not in a frame of mind to remove the support after it happened. I will do that today. I also got a suggestion from another member of a contact who may possibly have one. I am going to call him today. Either way, I am going to try to have this one repaired. Parts are too hard to find to just discard them. |

Thank you 19FORDY
I could not reply to your PM because I am new to the Ford Barn and did not have enough posts to do so. Do you have contact info for this person? If so, could you send me another PM. Thanks again |
