Pinion Bearing Lubrication
Getting ready to re-assemble the pinion gear assembly and want to know if I should pack the three bearings with grease or just a little gear oil (140W) beforehand. I know the bearings will be lubricated by the oil in the differential housing, but wasn't sure if greasing them was a bad idea.
Thanks in advance. Mark Bidwell |

Re: Pinion Bearing Lubrication
Would that include the spider gears as well? The vern target book says to coat all in grease during assembly. When I rebuilt mine, I used 140W on everything as the grease/ gear oil mix i removed upon disassembly didn't look like it mixed too well.

Re: Pinion Bearing Lubrication
Can't answer that. The OP was asking about the pinion bearings.I have seen 9" rebuilders using new gears use a white break in grease on the pinion and ring gear teeth besides gear oil for the first few hundred miles then drain and refill .

Quote:
The white grease is for checking the contact pattern of the ring and pinion teeth. Since the ring gear is submerged in gear oil any white grease is immediately washed off anyway. |

Re: Pinion Bearing Lubrication
I just use some very light oil - as I know once I fill up the banjo with gear lube, it will be immersed in it. Just don't forget to put the gear lube in! Have you checked the pre-load on the pinion - as well as the carrier/ring gear assembly . . . and both together?
