I've powder coated a lot of parts but never a block. IMO it would ad to much material to the surface and make it difficult to dissipate head. Powder coating is fairly thick. That said a lot of guys prime their blocks with epoxy then a finish coat of paint so there may no difference.

Not sure what your car is ie:Concourse class etc. I think powder coat is an expense you could avoid. My '41 had a painted block and heads that looked fine after 15 years. Other items such as air cleaner, fan, generator and exhaust manifolds would be better to spend the money on for powder coating.

Re: How many of you have Powder coated blocks/parts
I had several sets of '35 wire wheels powder coated 9-10 years ago. They look just as good today as they did when they were first done. I am glad I had them done and would do more that way if I needed them. Having said that, I would not have a FH block powder coated. I guess in my mind I don't see any advantage in doing that instead of painting. JMO

Re: How many of you have Powder coated blocks/parts
I made the mistake of powder coating a block once (should say something with that statement by itself), only to find that it was prone to run hot afterwards. Although it was easier to clean, I eventually wound up pulling the engine and sandblasting the block to get back to bare metal; the subsequent rebuild resulted in a much more serviceable engine and better running car. No regrets since.

Just a thought that powder coat will not allow a ground most times.

Re: How many of you have Powder coated blocks/parts
I am in the big boat building business, We powder coat a lot of fabricated aluminum parts. the powder coating is way tougher than polurethane paint and costs us a lot less than paint. My powder coater also does that silver ceramic coating on headers. I have often wondered about having him do the exhaust runners in one of my flatheads, to keep some of the heat out of the water jacket. What do you guys think? Rich

I did powder coat my generator casing, but left the important contact points bare metal, so it would work properly. |
