Cas,
It may be the correct one?? David G may have to help on that detail.
I got the kick panels today. Just need to get the holes layed out and installed. Then the horn will be moved up on the list of things to complete.
Regards,
Chris

Folks,
I did some work on the kick panels. The easy peasy one is the drivers side:

Passengers side needs some more fiddling around, including the map pocket and the attachment of the spare wheel mounting bracket:

These are going to look much better than the falling apart originals. I may save the originals for a while but they probably should be thrown out. That would be the right thing to do.
Hope things are good in Ford land!
Regards,
Chris

Where did you source the kick panels?

Seth,
I got the black hard board from local uphostery shop. I did the lay out and fit up, and hole pattern work for them in the cab. Then took them back to the Daves Upholstery in Albion PA and had him glue some black vinyl to the boards. I think its going to be fine. I had to get some non Ford trim screws for the drivers side panel. They are black and look about the right size, but are phillips head and Ford did not use phillips type fasteners at that time.
Regards,
Chris

Chris,

When you run out of things to do, could you please post a close-up photo of one of your original cowl trim panels. My interest is seeing the texture of the exposed side.

Thanks.

David,
I will try to get a closer picture of the texture of the vinyl, which is just some black material that the shop had from another upholstery job. I will probably get points deducted. But I can take it!
Regards,
Chris

Chris,

Sorry, I wasn't clear. It's the original panel's exterior texture that I'm interested in.

Chris,
If you have the storage space, I recommend hanging onto the original panels. I had similar thoughts about the interior panels for my '35 truck and just never go around to tossing them in the trash. I'm so glad I hung onto them as I got lots of details from them that just aren't available anywhere else. Don't want to turn you into a horder, but original parts are original only once and don't come back after you toss them and want to look at them again.

David, Dave, folks,
I will try to get some pictures. They did have a sewn edge of material around the perimeter. That feature is not on my replacements.
Regards,
Chris

Folks, David G.
Some pictures of the old material that is on the kick panels:

This is the new material

As I mount the map pocket, in slightly different location to miss the bolts for the spare wheel bracket:

Right or wrong I just cleaned the map pocket and mounted it. Leaving the original patina even though it was mounted on the newer kick panel.

Do you normally keep a spare tire on the bracket? I think the setup is very cool, but I also think it may be in the way at times. Either way, your truck is looing really, really good. What I like to call "In the perfect state of disrepair".... In a loving way of course!

I like the way you kept the original patina on the map pocket, it fits with how you are keeping your truck.

Keep those old ratty panels. There probably aren't too many originals around to show future generations how they were made. If you ever decide to toss them, let me know and I'll pay the postage for you to send them to me for safe keeping. Your new panels look great.

Chris,

Thanks for the photos of the original panels. It's fascinating that they were bound almost all the way around rather than just on the trailing edge by the door opening.

The grain of the new material is a pretty decent match of the grain of the original material. Also worth knowing is that the outer layer with the grain is separate and not an integral part of the cardboard itself, at least so it appears.

David,
I really wanted the upholstery shop to stitch around the edge like the original. He said he could not do it, because it would damage the sewing machine. When looking at the original kick panels they are only about half the thickness of the new black hard board backer I used. Morale of the story would be to get a lighter backer and then sew the edges with the finish material.
We went to a nice dinner at a fancy resturant tonight for a antique car club meeting. I was elected president of the local Presque Isle Region AACA. John was elected to the board of directors. Several new members joined tonight also. Good meal, Good friends, Good Old cars!
Regards,
Chris

GB,
Wasnt ignoring you. Hope things are good on the island!
Yes I do have the spare on often, especially when going to shows. BUT, it is really in the way of the door opening. Was thinking that as most of my winter things in the cab are complete, I could put it back on. Getting adults in and out of the passegeners side is not good at all when the spare is on the truck! Door maybe opens 30% of the way. I like the look of the sidemounted spare on a dump truck. The modifications to the rear of the frame, forced Ford to put on the tire well type right fender. Now Nate's BIG red truck in Bowling Green KY has the spare on the drivers side! He says the door opens ok. Someone mentioned the new 6.00-20 tires may be several inches bigger than the original tires made back in the day??
Regards,
Chris

David,
My picture was not good. The door opening edge recieved the covering only. I have the panels laying over each other and it makes it look like the edge covering is on the firewall side too. Not! Ford was frugal for sure.

Chris
