Default Crab distributor 6v to 12v

So on the original system 6v positive earth the resistor gives approx 3.5 v to distributor points. Then change to 12v negative earth coil is changed to 12v but distributor can still remain also existing condenser remains.
The reason the distributor does not need to be changed out is? Less amps with 12v?
Keen for an explanation on this one.
