Default Noise on startup

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post... I started our 28 pickup (what we call a "ute" here in Australia!) for the first time in about 2 months. It is our winter here so fairly cool. The motor made a rattle for a couple of minutes after starting. I thought to myself "It's probably the valves running with no oil and it will go away once the motor warms up". Just as I was getting a bit more worried, the noise virtually dissapeared suddenly. I let it warm up and drove it a little. Back in the shed I listened to it idle and it seemed fine.

My question is, is it normal to get a bit of noise from the valves if the motor hasn't been started for a while?

Thanks in advance for any advice received.

Andrew.

Sounds normal to me. Let it cool down and start it again, see if the rattle is still there hopefully not.

an engine rattle at start up to me means that you have loose rods, they rattle till they get enough lubrication to cusion the rods, a sharp high rattle is rods, a deep thumping rattle is usually mains, the rattle happens after sitting for a long time because the oil drains off the crank, causing excessive play, i know its a pain but i would drop the pan and check the rods and mains

I would think the mains need adjusting. Valves will not change like that, and rods get oil immediately unless the dipper tray has holes rusted in it. It takes a few seconds for oil to get to the mains. While your there, check the rods as Ray says.

Thanks for your comments guys - I didn't think to restart it when cool - hopefully everything will be OK...If not, looks like i will be dropping the pan!

Dave in Australia - our ute is Australian bodied - the full side body. What sort of A do yo have?

Cheers,

Andrew.

Depending how you describe Rattle, it could be a lot of things.

If it's only at start-up, could it be that the "Bendix" s not pulling back because of dried grease.

When you start this monster for the next couple times why not open the hood, start it from outside and see if you can determine where the noise is really coming from.. Dropping the base is far from being a quick and easy job..

ok, after all is said and done, no good running engine should, rattle, click, thump, or grind, if it does find out why, even if it means taking some of it apart

Hi Patrick L - yes I do own a 1912 Minerva. Someone else here asked me a similar question so I posted 2 pics in an album on my profile page if you are interested...

Thanks to everyone else who has provided advice. Our local vintage car club is having a run this Saturday so hopefully I will get an idea as to what (if anything) might be making the noise and will let you know.

I think Minerva's are quite a vehicle, I'll assume yours has a Knight engine.. Thats one of my favorite engines..
