How were these designed to work. I disassembled and cleaned up the latch, it seems to be operational now but I have a question if it's actually working properly.

It's locked. It will open with the key, but remove the key and close it and it's locked again.

Is that normal?

Edited to add that it's a 40 Tudor Deluxe

For my car it is not. BTW its a 39 Standard Coupe.

For '41 - '48 cars I have found two different locks. One will only let you remove the key when the handle is locked and the other will release the key in either locked of unlocked position.

That seems to be what my 40 is doing. Only released the key when the handle is locked.

That is normal operation.

The ‘40 trunk lock cylinder (Hurd version) can be modified to be able to remove key in locked or un-locked position. I usually keep one in stock , but can modify existing if OEM Hurd.

If I am using the trunk in my 40 coupe, I leave the key in the lock. Then everyone tells me I forgot the key in the trunk!

I ground the head of the key to my '40 trunk so it would fit under the cylinder cover when closed.

I put a new weather strip on my 40 Tudor. It is thicker than the old dried out one,which makes getting the trunk open interesting. you have to push on the trunk under the handle to get it open

Your striker should be adjustable and that should solve the problem.
