Default Owners 0f Stromberg 97 ?

Do you have a very minor leak out of the top gasket?

Is yours an original or one of the new ones made by Stromberg in the UK?

Its a new one, the top gasket has a film of gas, they are going to send me a thicker gasket. I was told by someone who just works on Strombergs, that most do that. The person who rebuilt my engine said,
4 new ones leaked on him, so he only uses older 97s.

That's a new one on me

You sure it's a new English built Stromberg and not the Super 97 from Speedway?

Who are the 'they' that are going to send you a new gasket?

No way the Super 97, I heard all about that one with the plastic float bowl, and possibly inferior parts from China. Its amazing how it looks, just like the 97, but much cheaper.

Yes, and mine is a 4 year old English stromberg 97. Also seepage from the butterfly valve rod.

The cheap thin gaskets that some sell/use, are not a credit to any carburetor proper use.
Warped mating surfaces on carbs are not uncommon either. Put a thin gasket onto a warped mating surface and that compounds seeping problems.

BTW....if you have the FLOAT SETTING wrong (i.e.- TOO high) that will eventually saturate a gasket and cause weeping. So, begin remedy by first checking mating surfaces for flatness; adjust float to proper height and get/use good thick Stromberg gaskets.

Do you use an electric pump ? If so, do you know what psi you are using ?
Over 21/2 to 3 lbs will force needle off seat somewhat to cause flooding/weeping. What needle/seat do you use...may stick open or closed if inferior.

Sent the Carb to Max, he is one of Strombergs experts, he said its not uncommon for them 2 have the minor leak. he also adjusted the Carb. I had this happen with the pump off. When using the pump, had it set at 1Lb.

OK, 1 lb. is not too much and IF mating surfaces were FLAT and good gaskets and float adjustment...it should not weep/leak, IMO !
I've had Max do two strombergs for me in the past. He does make them into beauties and mine did not weep. He knows all the tricks and things to make them go together properly and operate great...for the situation you tell him about...for their intended use.
However, I'm surprised that he says that will weep...if done properly.

Do some homework/study and save a lot of money to spend on premium parts, and a couple necessary tools...and do your own Stromberg . They are the easiest carb to do and work great when properly done. I just finished two 81s, and am working a third. Flatten/clean the surfaces, clean all passages and take your time doing so. When jets, etc. seem impossible to remove, use 'juice' and let set. Cleaning / recoating everything is a pia and what I consider the real work. If I can do it, you can too.
As said, google is your friend, and I'm willing to talk car stuff, as a lot of guys do also.

BTW...do NOT confuse gas fumes for weeping ! Gas evaporates and leaves CRUD behind on exterior and interior (tars, varnishes, etc..). Occasional PM will do for this. Weeping leaves evidence on edges of gasket and down sides of bowl.

I was sent a new top gasket from Max, much thicker then the original. Installed the gasket, no more leaks, perfectly dry.

Charlie is a member who frequents the Early V8 (flathead) sister forum.
Very knowledgeable / helpful in providing many parts/services.
Do a search in above header. Great guy/asset to our hobby .
