Default Brake Rod Return Springs...

Guys,
The Brake Rod Return Springs, A-2503, are bent. In other words the two springs on the rear service brake rods, both right and left, are about 1.5 inches forward of the solid metal stop on the brake rod themselves when they should be mated up with each other when the service brakes are idle.
These are original, flat spring metal springs on a February. March 1929 vehicle and I do not want to break them BUT want them to work properly.
What is your suggestion on how to correct this dilemma WITHOUT breaking the springs themselves?
What have you done to rectify this problem?
Thanks.

I use 2 pliers and put a lot of bend in them, almost folding them in half. They spring back quite a bit, but I've never broken one doing this.
