Default F-6 trans help?

My old '51 F-6 needs the trans replaced. After 60 years of use and abuse, she is really acting up. What years and model trucks used this trans? T-89 I think? This is the synchronized trans not the rock crusher used in pickups. Also has a different mount.....any help appreciated.

My book says 48 thru 52 F-6 (TH) models all used the same 4-speed boxes and they were fully synchronized with helical gears. Part number A8T-7001-A. These were also used in 6-cylinder applications from 48 thru 51 with 226 and 52 with the 215. Other models that used them were the F-4, F-5, F-5 COE, and F-6 COE. You have to use care when looking though since there was still a spur gear 4-speed available with some of these models as well.

I don't know what the parts availability is for these but you might be better off to try and rebuild it. If you find another one it might be in the same shape as yours. Old farm trucks are usually fairly good bets since they only were used during harvest and occasionally to haul cattle if so equipped.

T-98. I would suggest you rebuild it. The T-98 is similar to the common T18 and T19, so finding the internal parts should be no problem. It's the case and bellhousing to the flathead that makes it more rare. Maybe try vanpelts?

FWIW, I just got one myself, and it seems stuck, but I haven't opened it up yet. But I have a couple T18's to compare the parts to.

These old transmissions are fairly rare. They came standard behind the 254cid I6 in F6's only. Even though the manual states they were an option in the F4/5, most trucks did not get this transmission. As an example, Chuck of Chuck's-Trucks, came asking me if I wanted to sell mine, so they must be rare if he doesn't have any. That said, if you find another, I'm sure he'll be interested in taking your current one.

My 51 F6 has the spur gears, double clutching is the only way to shift.
I didn't think they had synchros-

The old 49 grain truck we had on the farm had the spur type too. I think it was either a B&W T8 or T9 I don't remember. It was a double clutcher for sure. I just don't know how many had the T98 type but I think it was an option. From what I can tell, they all used the same clutch which would mean they have the 1 3/8 10 spline main drive input shaft up through 52. It seems like one used a rear mount and one used a side mount but I can't remember for sure on that either. The later types after 52 went to a 1 1/8 10 spline main drive input shaft so they used a little different clutch.

Hmmmm...didn't realize those transmissions were that rare. Are parts available? I have a T-98 from a later truck (53-64)...I wonder if I could make that work? Or maybe the guts are the same? Any one know for sure?

That's what I'm in the process of doing. T98's are pretty common in later trucks and Jeeps. If the internals are the same, then it should be good to go. Maybe have to use the mainshaft from the original for proper length and spline count, but I guess we'll find out. But if anyone knows, I'm all ears as well.

My thought on the case being unique to the flathead is due to the bellhousing bolt pattern.
