I Need A Temperature Guage ???

Hi Guys Happy 4th Weekend. I would really like to install a temperature guage in my 31 roadster , looking into Brattons catalogue i see two different types, any one have any ideas? ? . i do not want to make any holes in the firewall and thought i could get a wire up through the choke hole or speedometer hole?. I also would want to mount the guage near or on the steering column. any suggestions out there as to the best kind and where to buy ETC. Looking foward to hearing from you. THANKS THE HOOCH

Happy 4th Hooch. I have always had good luck with S-W Mechanical Gauges. I like the 270° sweep as it makes it easier to read (for me).

I ran the capillary tube along the left side of the engine and up the steering column. It is mounted on my steering column.

If you are running a 6 volt system you will most likely have to go with Snyder's, Bratton's,
etc. If you are running a 12 volt system you can go with a local parts store for a electrical
temp gauge and bracket. MO.

Or use a mechanical gauge like I suggested and it doesn't matter what voltage, just change to light bulb to your flavor...

Good afternoon...I use a Vintage Precision Temperature Guage Housing...Not cheep but very nice...comes with a high quality thermostat and has the location to screw in the mechanical temperature guage...Vintage Precision.com or 800-486-0021...Just another possibility...Ernie in Arizona

Why not use a motometer in the radiator cap, thats something that has worked well before A's were even built.

I use a Stack water temperature gauge, not cheap, lights up for driving at night. Part number ST3358 www.stackltd.com works great….!

I have a Stewart-Warner gauge with the Vintage Precision water neck and thermostat. I’ve been very pleased with the configuration.

The temperature garage is in the left holder, and I have a tachometer in the right holder. The dash light illuminates both gauges when I drive in the dark.

Exactly! Model As do not stay at a constant temperature like modern cars do. You go up a hill, the temp rises, you go down the hill, it falls. You stop at a red light, the temp rises, you take off when it turns green, it falls. If you're obsessing over every rise and fall of the temperature, you won't be enjoying your drive. The Model A will let you know when it's too hot without monitoring every change in degree.

The temperature gauges measure the coolant temperature at the gooseneck. Depending on whether you are running a thermostat or not that temperature can be quite different than the temperature at the head or oil pan. Using an IR temperature gauge my head temperature was 170 and my oil pan temperature was 205 while the temperature gauge at the gooseneck was measuring 140. I have a thermostat but I have drilled 6 1/4-inch holes in the flange so that I always get some coolant flow.

All said, the temperature gauge in the gooseneck is useful to keep an eye on the coolant temperature when under heavy load. The Motometer will work too but under normal driving mine does not even register. Only when running up a long steep grade will the fluid in my Motometer peek up about 1/4 inch. Before I fixed my cooling issues (new radiator) my Motometer would get to the circle when the car was about to boil over.

That was my experience too. The Motometer is useless until the water is almost boiling and rises up in the radiator neck to touch the sensor tip.


The vintage gauge in my dad's 29 Tudor read 140 most of the time. Took a few miles and a hill to get it there, but it usually stayed in about the 140 area. Ambient temps 45 to 75 degrees. When it got to 160 I knew I was getting low on water. Sensor was in the engine water outlet.

The motometer was never intended to touch coolant, the design is to sense steam early before the entire cooling system is to boiling so you can slow down or reduce load , the actual coolant temperature is very close, I have checked that

I have a Quail radiator cap with the temperature indicator. It doesn't tell you actual temperatures but it does show initially a red column when the engine starts to run hot. It is all you need to make a stop and check things out.

My motometer is keeping company with my bench these days. Someone tried to steal it, and broke the neck of my expensive radiator. With a motometer you get the hang of it fairly quickly.

Get a Stewart-Warner mechanical gauge and you'll never have any trouble.

Yes Gene it is a vacuum gauge. Kind of an oddball gauge I had and an extra hole. Not something I monitor often but you can check the operation of the engine easily.
