Shoebox overdrive lock out lever
A basic question I realize, but what type of bolt is used to attach the overdrive cable to the lockout lever on the transmission? The hole appears to be about a 1/2". Was it a type of shoulder bolt ? It is an item that is missing and I'm trying to attach it correctly. Thanks for any help that may be provided.

Re: Shoebox overdrive lock out lever
It is a drilled 5/16" bolt with the other associated components.

Re: Shoebox overdrive lock out lever
Seriously doubt you will readily find anything but something could be fabricated without any machining other than drilling the hole in the bolt for the Bowden cable.
Just have to make sure that when the cable is pinched that the whole unit is loose in the lever hole.

Re: Shoebox overdrive lock out lever
Interesting, I put one of these transmissions in my car and I didn't know what it was supposed to have either. I got one of these cable stops from the auto parts store, along with some washers to hold it in the arm. Worked like a charm.

Re: Shoebox overdrive lock out lever
Another interesting solution. Is the cable stop itself free to move when the cable is pushed in or pulled out? Do you recall the OD of the " barrel" portion?

Re: Shoebox overdrive lock out lever
I can try to snap a picture for you tonight. As I recall I put flat washers on either side of the overdrive lockout lever and used a longer bolt than the one supplied with the cable stop. With the cable stop tightened up it's still free to pivot in the hole in the lever, so the cable remains straight when pulled.

Re: Shoebox overdrive lock out lever
As a neophyte lathe owner, I am going to try to make my own piece. It looks like a good "starter" project to me.

Tubman,
I recently moved to Savannah and downsized including my mill, 3 metal lathes and most other large tools. I didn't realize how many times since I thought "I'll just make this or that item". Oh well. |

Re: Shoebox overdrive lock out lever
Actually, took the first drive with the OD functioning. I had never had a car similarly equipped. What a difference it makes. The reduction in RPM (engine noise) was dramatic. The rear end gear ratio kept the engine revved up when not in OD. At the moment I simply have the the lockout lever in the OD on position until I work out the cable attachment to the lever. Thanks for the great suggestions everyone.

Re: Shoebox overdrive lock out lever
I see you have a '51 Victoria. They are in my opinion the best looking of all the "shoebox" Fords, despite the fact that they were a last minute "patched together" effort to compete with the new Chevrolet "BelAire" hardtop introduced the previous year.
I really wanted one, but had to settle for a club coupe. |

Re: Shoebox overdrive lock out lever
Tubman, I agree with you. It was styled by Gordon Buehrig of ACD fame. He had so many incredible designs. My first Victoria was in 1954. Back then I put a nail valve Buick in it from a 1956 Century. More power than sense. I bought this one in 2003. It's taken a while

Tubman,
I didn't intend to omit commenting on your car. I actually like all Shoebox models. It's just that the only cars that I have had are Victorias. |
