Default 1937 windshield glass installation

Hi
I pulled out the windshield today and am about to replace the glass. I've got new seals too. Any good advice on how to go about this procedure? Do I need setting tape or silicone?
Thanks!

You could see if the soap and string method would work for you.

Sorry to be short on details but it's something about laying heavy string in the channel, pressing the glass in then drawing the string out out to drag the lip of the seal with it.

I'm looking at that operation myself in the future.

The '37 windshield frame separates into two pieces to replace the glass. The glass is set in tape and the frame re-assembles around the glass. I don't know what materials it takes to install the glass. I had a glass shop install mine. It was so cheap to have them do it that I wouldn't consider it. They have the tools and the materials and can do it fast.

The seal is a different matter. The old, hard seal must be completely removed from the channel. Make whatever tool it takes to clean the grit, rust, stuck rubber, etc out of the channel where the seal lip goes. Soapy water will help installation go better. Don't stretch the seal or you get to take it out and start over.

The soap and string method will NOT work on your '37.
40cpe gave you some pretty good information on the seal.

If you do the job yourself, use the correct thickness of setting tape,
and some soapy water to help slip the glass into the frame.

Get a friend to help hold things steady.

I built this jig to hold my pieces when I restored my 1937 Ford Windshield. I taped on the setting tape, used foamy window cleaner, gentle persuasion and a lot of patience. Turned out pretty good. Make sure you have the right setting tape and be careful not to break your glass. Chris Blatty was a big help to me.

I only got so far... How do you pull the two pieces of frame apart? I've cleared all the old sealant and the frame is loose everywhere except for the corners. Are there any clips? Do you pull or slide them apart?

Here's some pics of my 39 pickup frame showing that after removing screws the upper and lower parts slide apart. Believe the 37 frame is similiar to this, I had already had it apart and removed the stainless small trim pieces where the outside frame sections joined together. Also center bar trim piece slides off.
