Note the timing cover on the right does not have a generator mounting pad and is missing the engine front mounting bolt hole on the right. This came off an engine that appears to have been in service in some capacity.

A close inspection reveals that the mounting pad and the bolt hole were very carefully machined off. The question is why would someone do that. It would seem that even if used in an industrial application it would need the right engine mounting bolt hole.

The timing cover on the left is a normal cover.

Could it have been used in the aircraft version of the Model A Engine? Those engines used a Magneto and no front mount I believe.

Perhaps an industrial application such as driving a commercial generator.

I don't know if Baldwin Gleaner made any changes for their combine application or not. There have been a number of industrial applications for the 200 cid Ford 4 cylinder.

Aircraft applications like the Pietenpol would have been modified by the owner/builder and most of them insist on driving the mag off the crankshaft with a flat plate fabricated into the timing cover. I would set one up to drive off the cam like they should be but each builder has the flexibility to set is up however they want since the Air Camper is an "Experimental" category home built aircraft.
