Default Spring Repair - broken Perimeter wire?

How would a seat cushion spring with a broken perimeter wire be repaired?

Neil: I would try brazing it back together with another short length of similar wire along side the original break as a "brace". Brazing leaves a smooth rounded edge so it won't rip new fabric.

Instead of "brace", "splint" might be a better word.

What are your thoughts about using a wire feed welder to hold the small piece of tubing or a splint?
I have never had luck trying to braze.

find a upholstery supple near you they sell the wire, you can use your old clips and make a new wire. do not try to braze the wire, it will break, years ago I was a springer in a furniture factory. it is pretty easy to do.

JW, Are you saying that the entire perimeter wire should be replace or just use a piece of wire to make a splice?

John nailed it. Go to an auto upholstery shop or supply warehouse. Ask them for edge wire. In this case it looks like a 8 or 9 inch length will do. There are special fasteners that crimp the new edge wire to the old wire. Hog rings will work in a pinch.

I have a donor spring. I can cut a length of edge wire and splice it to the broken wire. Thanks for the help.

An auto upholstery shop has material & special crimpers to replace the WHOLE edge wire & make it like NEW. Splicing it would NOT be a substantial repair, it would break, in time & punch you in the BUTT & wreck your seat cover.

So that's the proper name! I've been calling it an "Outrigger" for lack of a better name. Go to my profile, then go to my albums "My A". In there I have a lot of pics of my seat springs being made and I had to make just such a wire for my fordor seats. Just buy it and bend it. Don't try to weld or braze it. Any good upholstery shop should be able to direct you.

Terry, exactly which photo of your's shows the perimeter wire installed (I could not find one)? The perimeter wire you made was a straight wire which you bent using the original as a pattern - correct. How did the two ends of the finished wire get connected?

Go to an antique car flea market and try find a rear seat bottom that is not rusty. The springs can be easily removed and fitted back into your seat assemble. I have an old seat spring assembly that I have used for years to make repairs during a restoration. Ed

My error! Mia Culpa! Go to the albums again. Open all the albums and you'll see "My Coupe" (Red wheels) On the first page of the album, 3rd row down, 5th pic across is the pic I thought was in the "My A" album. Go to a body shop supply house that handles Au-ve-co products and Auveco ( www.auveco.com) makes all sorts of clamps, clips and rings for the upholstery trade. I used # 7707 clamp, clip to secure the back end of the perimeter wire. It was something like $7 @ box of 100 about three or four years ago. My apology for sending you to the wrong album.

Thanks Terry, I found the picture and the Auveco clamp. It looks like I could use the clamp on my existing perimeter wire. It has one clean break.

Thanks for your held.
