Valve Guide Pre Lube
In the end the stuck valve (See "Loose Valve Guides" thread) turned out just to be either carbon or rust build up in the guide. I got a .342 and a .343 reamer to clean them out (intake and exhaust respectively).
Any ideas on the best pre lube to put on the stems and guides during assembly? Its likely to sit again for prolonged periods of time. Options considered: engine oil MMO STP graphite hi temp brake grease The valve spring pressures were measured at 3 points 2.125”, 2.0”, and 1.83”. Averages came out at 37.5, 51, and 69 respectively. Variation was 36 to 40 at 2.125. |

Re: Valve Guide Pre Lube
If you engine is going to set for a long while before running I don't see why STP slimed all over the valve stems and guides when assembling should last along time. I use Lubraplate assemably grease on everything. On the cam and lifters use special cam lube. Walt

Re: Valve Guide Pre Lube
I use Lubriplate Motor Assembly lube and Valvoline Racing oil. But there is more to doing the job than simply slathering on the lube. Whatever is used it must get into the necessary areas. Also, running an engine without a load and at low RPM during the initial start-up should be avoided.
Put about an inch of lube (Racing Oil) inside the guide. While holding the bottom of the guide firmly down on the work bench, install the valve and push it down thru the oil to squeeze the lube up around the valve stem and guide bore. It won't be easy because clearance is minimal. Next apply a thin coat of Lubriplate and install in the engine. |
