Default A Good Parts Guy Is Hard To Find

A couple weeks ago I was in touch with my local auto parts supplier about brake parts for my 48 F1. He had listings for the shoes, and wheel cylinders, but nothing else ( springs, hold downs, adjusters etc). Instead he matched up the spring kits with the shoes and got me a set of mid 60's GM springs. They came back as a spring kit for self adjusting brakes. At first I was a little concerned since the originals had completely different star wheels and did not have the self adjusting arms.

Well it turns out everything fit perfectly, I now have self adjusting brakes on the F1. THe only thing that didn't fit was the rear shoes that had to be drilled out to 3/8 for the sleeve that holds the adjusting arm to the shoe, and which also holds the "hold down" spring. Also the backing plate holes don't line up with the star gear adjusters. Other than that it looks perfect.

Nice to see a parts guy that can actually think outside the box!

You could also use the brake hardware from an early 70s Ford Galaxie. The springs and adjusters , cables, etc... work perfectly on the F-1. THat's what I did on my 50 F-1. I am one of those old time parts guy who had 30 plus years at various Ford dealers.

Having worked in GM Parts for many years, I have wondered where all those self adjusting kits were going.

Yep, good ones are getting harder and harder to find. They are out here, though.
