Default Gas tank color 1938 station wagon

Should this be painted black ?

The 1937 Ford book published by the Early Ford V8 Club states the fuel tank was painted with M-177 black frame paint. It describes the paint as, "This is a semi-gloss black which has much less gloss than the M-102-E (Black Japan Dipping Enamel)."
