Changing pulley on 59a
I want to change my crank pulley from a double to a single for crossmember clearance. Is it possible to change out the pulley without screwing up the seal? Any other advise would be appreciated.

Re: Changing pulley on 59a
As long as the new pulley has a smooth and flat seal surface, you shouldn't have a problem.

Re: Changing pulley on 59a
What year engine and what size belts? If you're talking about a later 49-53 engine, there are two different styles of pulleys --> one has the seal surface built in, the other does not. For the one that does not, there is a "sealing sleeve" that slides over the crankshaft to interface with the front seal. Just something to be aware of . . .
If you're talking an earlier 39-48 "dual sheave truck style - wide belt pulley" situation, then you can easily just replace the pulley with a single belt version. What you'll have to pay attention to is whether or not your situation has a fan mount on the front of the pulley - or not. If it does, it can be cut-off if needed (I do this all the time). You might want to give us some more information on the engine year, pulley styles, etc.. Pictures surly help! B&S |

Re: Changing pulley on 59a
The single one can be made from the double type by cutting off the front sheave. You will still have the long snout on the crankshaft though. If you need a shorter snout then some work would have to be done on that to shorten it and be functional with the early type pulleys that were on the 32 through the end of short snout crankshaft production in the late 30s.

Re: Changing pulley on 59a
Given what you have - should be an easy swap . . just put a bit of oil on the sealing surface of the pulley before you put it on the new engine.

Re: Changing pulley on 59a
Just to add, be sure that the crank snouts are the same length or at least have the same amount of protrusion from the front cover. If it fit for one engine, the other should be OK if it's the same.
