Default Shock rebuilders

In an earlier post, I was given two names of guys who rebuild shocks.

I have four shocks of unknown condition. Here's my question:

When I call them, what should I state and what will they ask me so I can properly describe what I have. I want to be totally honest with them so I can get an accurate estimate.

Strange question, yes.. but I need to approach this in the right way.

Thank you!

Make the phone calls, then proceed.
Ask what the core charge is. You will pay more for obtaining a set appropriate for the build date of your car.
Locating a rebuildable core is the key problem in my opinion.
These guys have dealt with more shocks than you and I will ever see in 5 lifetimes.
They are the experts.
Nothing more I can add.

I have a few sets of shocks I need rebuilt and recently called both John and Robert. In the past I have used Robert and have been happy with his work. I have heard good things about John as well but have not had him rebuild any shocks for me. Both have a backlog right now. Robert has a few cores if needed. Last time I checked he charged $60 per shock for the rebuild and $30 for a core is yours are not good. When I spoke to John a few weeks ago his charge for rebuild was close to that but he has no cores available. Since you seem to be unsure of the condition of your shocks call Robert. He will talk to you about what to look at to determine if there is a good chance of rebuilding your shocks. He will also give you pointers on the best and cheapest way to ship the shocks to him.

I bought some cores from Brentwood Bob that I am grateful for. He shipped them to Robert Paul. Very stand up guy. I'm still waiting for the shocks, but at least I'm in line. I have nothing but respect for both Bob and Robert. You couldn't go wrong with either one. Lots of good people on the Barn.
