Stupid Horn Question
I'm having trouble with the horn on my 30 Tudor. It sounds like a dying cow. So I decided to take the back off and oil it to see if this would alleviate the issue; non fix. Upon further inspection, I noticed that there was the remnants of a "band-aid" on the rotor that looks as thoug it was put there on purpose. Should this be there? Is this the fix to my dead cow issue? Pictures attached.

Re: Stupid Horn Question
NO that is not suppose to be there and also you screw for the cover on the left, that is way way too long and might be interfering with the bar, but i do see a nut to keep it from moving I assume, you should get the correct one. Also it does look like your adjustment bar is bent a bit or maybe just the angle you shot the picture at..

Re: Stupid Horn Question
It may be the angle but in the right picture it doesn't look
like the right brush is touching the armature. Bob |

Re: Stupid Horn Question
Depends on how much you payed for it and if it was sold as a rebuilt horn.

Re: Stupid Horn Question
Here is a pic of a restored Sparton motor assembly so you can how it is supposed to look.
It apears that some amature has messed with it. It will be much cheaper to make this one correct than buying one of those repo horns. Any questions, call me. Hope this helps. Neil Stegall THE HORN MAN 601-469-0878 [email protected] |

Re: Stupid Horn Question
Thanks again for all of the replies. I actually didn't buy the horn myself. It was a birthday gift from my father. It was, however, represented as a professionally rebuilt horn, so I will find out this person's info and inform them of their misrepresentation. I was not planning on giving up on the horn; I also wasn't planning on rebuilding it either. But, I guess it all chucks up to understanding all of the components in my "A's." And Neil, thanks for your contact info, as I will most likly be calling you at some point this week.

Re: Stupid Horn Question
Did you back off the armature tensioner screw and see how it sounds at different clicks? Since you said it turned maybe it only needs some adjustment. I don't like the cover stud setup though.

Re: Stupid Horn Question
There are no stupid questions here, answers yes, but questions no!
Since it will move and makes some sort of sound, you are 9/10's of the way there. Vendors catalogs such as Brattons have the exploded view so you can see what is needed. Like the correct cover screw, part number 19970

Re: Stupid Horn Question
I would use the point of your pocket knife and lift each brush to see if it has good tension. That goofy stud needs to go, and if the original threaded hole for the cover screw is bad, then I'd weld the hole shut and drill and thread it to the right size.
It's too bad some of thesse "professional" rebuilders on ebay aren't even good enough to rate as amature rebuilders. They are professional cobblers. |

Re: Stupid Horn Question
I've heard of Band Aid repairs but didn't think anybody took it that literally!
I'd remove the band aid and clean the armature under it - there is probably going to be some gooey gunk left behind. Acrylic thinner or bake cleaner etc should do it well. I'd inspect the armature and give it a try if all looks well. If you are getting any noise now, the questionable brush is obviously contacting the armature, though it may well still be best to replace it. These horns can be fiddly but they are not complicated. Good luck.

Re: Stupid Horn Question
WD-40 does a good job of removing sticky goo. Just don't get it on pot metal, such as the popout switch body.

Re: Stupid Horn Question
WD-40 IS sticky Goo. It can only be removed with more of the same. Save it for your glass shower doors.

Re: Stupid Horn Question
Try ELECTRIC MOTOR CLEANER spray and very fine emory paper, (NO ALUMINUM SILICA)
As Mark and Mike said please purchase the CORRECT COVER SCREW as the cover tension impacts the horn's sound too. I use SEWING MACHINE OIL, 20 wt in summer and 10 weight in winter for a nice ahoogah. |
