‘46 Choke and Throttle rods
I’m about to refinish my choke and throttle rods on my ‘46 Mercury. I need to replace the rubber flex joints on the motor side of the firewall. I have purchased the flex joints from Dennis Carpenter, and I’m wondering the best way to install them. I’m planning on grinding off the sleeves of the old ones, but I’m wondering how to crimp the new ones on to the old rods. I’m thinking of using a heavy chisel to “swage” the flex joints to the rods. Or use a press to crimp them??? How have you done it?

Re: ‘46 Choke and Throttle rods
When I replaced mine I just pulled the metal ends out of the rubber and used the old rods with the new rubber.

Bruce: When I did my 41 pickup, I TIG Tack welded them. With caution, you can avoid melting the rubber. If I had to do it again, I would probably crimp them as you thought or swage them with a chisel. Another barn member recommended JB Weld. You could also buy the specific tool to do the crimp, but that might be a bit pricey.

I replaced them the same way as Graeme did on my 42 and 46 Fords.

Kind of Mickey Mouse but I also put metal fuel line clips on each end of the rubber where it slips over the shaft on the 42. Without the clips on the 46 I've had no issue though. I can get you a picture if you need it.

Re: ‘46 Choke and Throttle rods
Graeme was right… I just pulled the metal sleeves out of the rubber on each end. It was easy. I was assuming the rubber was moulded (maybe even vulcanized???) onto the metal sleeves. Nope… just pushed on.
