Hello Early V8 Folks
I just got home last night with my new toy, a 1946 Super Deluxe Convertible. It needs a little work to get it road ready. I'm a Model A guy from way back and new to the Flathead world. I'll be asking plenty plenty of questions on here and picking you guys brains.

Re: Hello Early V8 Folks
Let me be the first to tell you, unsnap the top on both rear sides before letting it down! It will rip there if you do not. Where did your car come from? A friend from Knoxville now gone was the master on restoring 46 converts.

Re: Hello Early V8 Folks
I would recommend purchasing the 1941-1948 Ford book from the V-8 Club of America and if you're not a member why not join the club.

Re: Hello Early V8 Folks
Welcome to the V8 side of the Barn, and nice car! I love the fat fendered Fords, sorta the red headed step child of early Fords. But I like em.

Welcome Mountain Dew. I am a relative newbie myself and I cannot say enough good things about this group and the help they can offer. I also second the motion of joining www.earlyfordv8.org as recommended by TJ The magazine is absolutely worth it.

Yes welcome, This is the right place to be. I also like those fat fendered Fords. In this day and age they have a certain kind of class.

The 41-48 Ford book is ordered. I'm on my way to NCDMV now to take care of the title and tags. Those guys are always fun to deal with (NOT!).

Re: Hello Early V8 Folks
Welcome nice looking ‘46, do you still have your Model “A”s. If I had multi car garage I wouldn’t mind owning an “A” also.

Re: Hello Early V8 Folks
Hyd info: Originally these cars had brake fluid for the hyd top system. Usually leaves a mess when they are out of use for a length of time. The pump is very simple and is powered by a motor most old Starter/gen/alt shops would have parts for. If your system is brake fluid, it can be purged and replaced with ATO. The one piece that is hard to come by is the switch so be careful with it. Replacement cyl are available and I had hoses made up at a local hyd shop. There is some excellent information in the Ford Svc Bulletins on the system. I would recommend getting a copy of the Post, reproduction Ford Service Bulletins 1941-48.

I hope this '46 will be as much fun to drive and tinker with as my Model A's have been. |

I ordered the 41-48 Ford book from the early V8 Club. Are there any special tools that will come in handy? Last edited by Mountain Dew; 04-28-2022 at 05:56 PM. |

Re: Hello Early V8 Folks
Somewhere I have a copy of a copy of several references to the conv that has parts, adjustment and service info. If you run into a problem Ill try to find it. No special tools are needed. You will find your car drives quite easily and if the shocks are good, acceptable body roll. Depending on the rear end gear, it will run the interstate traffic at 65 mph or so.

Re: Hello Early V8 Folks
Thanks for all the great replies.
I've been going through oiling all the hinges and pivot points trying to get the knobs and levers to move. Tomorrow I'll roll around underneath it, change oil, check brake fluid and such. The convertible top hydraulics is farther on down the list. The pump isn't even mounted and might need to be rebuilt. I'm sure i'll be picking you guy's brains on that thing. I'm still waiting for my Dennis Carpenter catalogue. Last edited by Mountain Dew; 04-30-2022 at 05:40 PM. |
