Re: Clutch,PP question
No. The 59AB and 8BA flywheels are different and do not interchange. If your 59AB flywheel is not drilled to accept a 10 inch PP you may have to re drill it for the PP? I have used a 10 inch PP on the back for several 59AB motors.

Re: Clutch,PP question
Does the 8ba FW. & PP interfere inside the 59 bell housing?

Re: Clutch,PP question
Most 59A that I’ve worked on have a 10” clutch and the flywheel doesn’t have the large lip around the edge. Sounds like you might have an earlier flywheel. The 8BA flywheel will fit inside the bell housing but that’s not the problem, it has a different offset.

Re: Clutch,PP question
Check around a 46-48 flywheel isn't that difficult to find. The machine shop I use has a pile of Flathead flywheels.

The offset causes starter drive gear to ring gear distance trouble. Some starters may work...I've heard of such but can't confirm that. Otherwise the parts will fit. Going the opposite direction, a 59AB flywheel will usually contact the rear of the 8BA block.

I know that my engine is a 46-48 Could be a parts combo from the previous owners I have a later merc block. Took me a couple days to air hammer the pistons out. This block is much, much worse condition. I did save the 4 " crank & FW (10 in clutch) I thought that I could use this FW and get me to the 10 in clutch on my 59 The 59 FW has a large outer diameter of CI If I use this FW, can I turn the extra CI off Apologies about the rookie questions. I would really like to know |

Re: Clutch,PP question
The factory 59 car and light truck engines all had 10" clutches in my experience. Are you sure you don't have a pre-war flywheel with a 9" clutch?

My original clutch is 9 inches. My FW is an early one. The PP mounting holes are blind bore holes, indicating pre war PP Now I need a 10 in PP for 46-48 59 AB Or I'm going to take a look at getting the PP from my 8 CM motor. I understand that the problem is how the starter gear engages the ring gear Anyone figured this out ??? |

Re: Clutch,PP question
I put a 46 big truck flywheel on a 49 merc, had to shave some off the back of the flywheel and make a custom starter drive to get full mesh with the ring gear that was a 11” clutch

Re: Clutch,PP question
send your pressure plate to a clutch rebuilder & ask them to put stronger springs in it it will hold as good as a 10

Re: Clutch,PP question
Someone near you has to have a flywheel for a 10" pressure plate. I know I have several kicking around, but shipping from Texas to New York would be way more than the part is worth. If you have access to a lathe and a mill it is a simple job to turn off the lip and drill for the larger pressure plate bolt pattern.
Be careful with Borg&Beck style Mercury pressure plates, there are two of them and the later 52-53 doesn't work with the earlier throw out bearing. |
