hubcap oddities?
While rummaging through my Model A parts, I came across these 'strange' (to me being new to A's) hubcaps. I have provided pics, but haven't been able to find anything online. The larger cap says 'FooF' with the F being transposed at both ends so it reads the same either way. The smaller cap is the same size as the ones on my '29 roadster p/u, but instead of reading 'Ford', it has a propeller embosed instead of the script....
Anyone know what I've got? Thanks, Craig |

Re: hubcap oddities?
These are Reproduction Hubcaps for the Model A Fords. The reason why they don't say "Ford" is so the Manufacturer didn't have to pay Royalties to Ford Motor Company. These days, the Companies that manufacture Reproduction Hubcaps have an agreement with Ford Motor Company, so that they are exact copies of the Originals. Hope this explains why these poor old Reproduction Hubcaps exist. |

That's what I heard was the story behind these hub caps. I have 3 of them for a "Bool". Anyone ever seen one of those cars??

Re: hubcap oddities?
Thank you from 'Down Under' mates. These are old and rusty as you can see, so when do you think these were made ? Why would they have been made at all when the A's weren't 'antique' at the time, just another 'jalopy' that was plentiful and parts not hard to get...just curious.

Re: hubcap oddities?
Here are some alternative designs for these Reproduction Hubcaps. I don't know what the early one spelt out - "Fool" or "Bool" ? |

I know that this model Hubcap has nothing to do with Model A Fords, but on the subject of Reproduction Hubcaps, look at how they got around the Royalties when they made a reproduction Hubcap for the 1941 Mercury. These days, things have changed and the Reproductions are very close to the Originals. |

Re: hubcap oddities?
It was an attempt to avoid paying royalties to Ford Motor Company !

Re: hubcap oddities?
I would think at that time, original hubcaps would be plentiful and not expensive, so no need to create a market for 'knock-offs'....but what do I know...lol. In the jeep world, cosmetic replacement parts would just be plain, i.e. tailgates, hoods, panels, without WILLYS or Jeep embossed on them.
