Default 40 ford 3 speed 2nd gear thrust washer

The main shaft in the transmission has a pin that holds the thrust washer behind second gear. Keeps the hard washer from spinniny.

This one i got apart has the pin sheared off. My guess it happened from being run out of oil. Is it a service part thats available or better off replacing the entire shaft.

I looked in van pelts catalog but didnt see it.

The pin is tough steel and .125 dia. I get the remainder of the sheared pin out by
carefully centering the shaft in my mill and drilling it out....the pin is tough not real hard.
If everything is lined up the drill usually 'catches' the pin and as the drill is backed out
it sort of pulls the sheared pin out.

What do you use for a replacement pin?

You’ll want to replace the pin. It’s there to keep the 81A-7071 washer from spinning (which would cause wear to the leading edge of the spiral splines on the mainshaft. The pin is p/n 81A-7072 I believe. What we have is slightly longer than the factory original pin so you have to trim it to 0.400” length. We provide two pins in case you mess the first one up.

As Charlie stated, they can be tricky to remove. We carefully grind a small centered divet into the top of the remaining stub of the old pin (using a dremel with a slender tungsten tip). Then we set up the mainshaft in a drill press vice and drill down with a fresh 1/8” bit (keeping it well oiled during the drill process).
Sometimes the stub comes out with the drill bit. Sometimes we have to use a small easy out to work out the remainder of the pin.

Test fit the replacement pin and the washer.....one of the slots should just ride over the top of the pin. We set the pin in with locktite. Once it’s in place there’s no way for it to go anywhere.
