Default Brake Drums

If you’ve ever cleaned up some 40 brake Drums you might have noticed a mark on them. This mark is there from the factory and is there to indicate the location of the wheel . The valve stem is supposed to be in close correlation to the mark for balance.

Mark on Brake Drum on 1940 Fords to indicate where the position of the Valve needs to be for better wheel balance.
Very interesting.

So, is that the heavy spot or the light spot?

I always assumed the weight of the steel that was drilled out for the valve hole in the wheel was replaced by the weight of the rubber stem. But maybe the stem actually weighs more than the steel.

Ken, Are you sure about the reason for that mark? I can't imagine folks on the assembly line matching valve stem locations to brake drum marks. It would be tedious and hard to do, I think.

Perhaps that mark is was made in the manufacturing process of assembling the brake drum and inner hub.

I found this information in some Ford literature I have. I’ll look for it . Some drums have fins on them and have a notch on one of the fins.

Can't argue with the Ford literature. Still amazes me that an assembly line worker would be able to literally line up those marks. If so, I bet it was it was only done once - at assembly time.

Wow! That is very interesting. Thanks for posting that literature. I learned something new.
Wonder if the same "theory" is used when mounting today's tires?

Nice info, I wonder if there were markings on 48-52 F1 drums? Amazing at the small details. I think there is a similar situation on 48-52 F1 fan hubs, one of the webs on the bearing is thicker to balance the fill hole and screw on the hub.

All bets are off if you have aftermarket drums.
