Default 1928 open car latch handle finish

I need to know what the finish should be on a 28 open car handle. 1928 open cars, roadsters, phaetons and open cab pickups, don't have outside door handles. The handle is an inside lever and I would like to know what the proper finish should be - nickel plated or painted body color. My handles are so weathered, I can't tell what they originally had for a finish. I have seen the handles painted and nickel plated on restored cars. I pasted in a picture of one of the handles below. My car is a September 28 roadster if that makes any difference. Any help would be appreciated.
