32 Pitman Arm Travel
Hi Guys - While trying to center my front wheels/steering wheel, I notice that the Pitman Arm bumps up against the bolt/nut used to attach the steering box to the frame. It contacts at both full right and left turns. Is this normal? I wonder if this is designed as intended stop to limit cross shaft travel?
Also could use any tips on Pitman Arm removal. I can't get my puller to fit over the arm. Sure do appreciate your help for this newbie to 32s. Dick |

The arm clears the bolts. Do you have stock parts? There is room to get a puller under the arm with stock parts. Does the pitman arm nut have slots for a cotter pin? Stock 32 used a special nut without the cotter pin and used a lock washer.

In response to the original question which concerns interference with the bolts/nuts that attach the steering gear to the frame and not the attachment of the Pitman arm to the end of the sector shaft, it sounds like the bolts are too long as the arm should not touch the bolts/nuts in either direction.
Consistent with both the '32 chassis parts catalogue and every original I've seen, the bolts were 3/8-24 x 1" with a drilled shank, the nuts were 3/8-24 (13/32 x 9/16) castle, not slotted hex, and held in place with 3/32 x 5/8 cotter pins. If your left front fender was the early version where the hole for the forward attachment of the fender to the frame side rail was shared with the upper steering-gear-to-frame bolt, the length of that bolt was 1 1/4" in length. Andy - Thanks for the comeback. I'm guessing parts are correct. The steering box to frame bolts are 3/8-24 x 1" with castle nuts & cotter pins on the outer side of the frame. The 1 7/16 nut uses a big lock washer holding the Pitman Arm.
I'm thinking that my puller claws are too thick to slide in between the frame rail and Pitman Arm boss. Trying to seek out a better type puller. Lots to learn here. Thanks again - Dick |
