Water Pump Won't Take Grease
I just installed a new leakless water pump on the Tudor. It came with instructions for greasing the rear bushing.
The instructions are to loosen the packing nut and pump grease into the brass fitting until it comes out around the shaft. One is supposed to do this every 500 miles. I can't get the fitting to accept any grease - what little goes in dribbles back out through the nipple on the fitting. I removed the fitting and see that there's grease in the cavity behind the fitting. Does this sound like a defect in the pump? How might I repair it? Thanks much. Dave |

Re: Water Pump Won't Take Grease
I am also having the same issue with the front fitting. I did try a new grease fitting just in case, with no success, I dread the thought of tearing the pump back off! Ugh.

Re: Water Pump Won't Take Grease
"Maybe" they are SEALED bearings that require NO GREASE??? "Maybe" call your supplier for more info??
There's a lots of variations in "leakless" water pump bearing set ups ! ! Bill W.

Re: Water Pump Won't Take Grease
Bill, the front bearing is sealed - no greasing required. The rear bushing is not sealed and the pump comes with instructions that clearly state it needs to be greased every 500 miles. I will be calling my vendor Monday but am hoping there's a fix.

Re: Water Pump Won't Take Grease
Have you tried taking the fitting out and sticking a wire in there
to make sure the passage is clear? Bob |

Re: Water Pump Won't Take Grease
Bob C, I probed the cavity behind the fitting with an awl, but the cavity is full of grease so it's very difficult to know whether there's an opening at the back of the cavity and/or if the grease can flow around/into the bushing.
Tom, you are so right. I've wrestled with repro part issues throughout my project. The pump is going back to the vendor tomorrow and I think I'll bring my grease gun so I can check it before leaving his shop! |

My leakless is the same way, it has been on my engine for some time, here is the answer.

Re: Water Pump Won't Take Grease
Hi Brian. My pump is the A-8502 (I still have the box it came out of) as opposed to the A-8503. The 8502 is supposed to be greased, the 8503 is not. Both are leakless.

Re: Water Pump Won't Take Grease
I also have one of the leakless water pumps that needs grease at the rear bearing and it takes it without a problem. I don't recall if I had to grease it immediately after installing or if it was already pre-loaded with grease.
If the fitting is just plugged, some hardware stores sell a sliding tool to force grease through the fitting if there's an obstruction. |

Re: Water Pump Won't Take Grease
Mitch, I'm considering upgrading to the totally leakless pump... it's only money.
heneste, thanks for the suggestion. I've checked the fitting - it's not plugged; the problem is internal to the pump. |

Re: Water Pump Won't Take Grease
I think I would call the vendor first, hopefully you get to speak to someone knowledgeable, greasing a water pump seems to be going backwards, anyone not knowing is likely to keep pumping grease waiting for it to appear somewhere, probably blowing out the seals, using the grease fitting for the rear wheel bearings is an example, in all my years in the repair shop I haven't yet seen a leakless water pump.

Re: Water Pump Won't Take Grease
Dave, info for your pump says that if you tighten the collar, you will not be able to get grease in! Check this link. Ron W

Newer is not always better. Tom, how many years/miles without a leak on your stock pump?

Re: Water Pump Won't Take Grease
I never kept track of the miles, and it would be less than many on here, but I rebuilt it totally stock in the early 90's, then installed it on my 28 about 15 years ago and it never leaked a drop. Last year I removed it and installed the rear bushing with the rear double lip seal, just to better keep the antifreeze and grease seperated.
