Default 108 in Portland

A new heat record for P-town: 108 degrees. My Model A’s overheated just sitting in the garage! The A’s will remain in the garage till this heat subsides. I, on the other hand, cooled off with a G&T. But that won’t work in my A’s. Whaddayou guys in really hot areas do? Like Phoenix? Texas? Nevada?

700rpm: Routinely in the 90s during Summer in Mississippi; we are accustomed to it, but still have lots of "work a rounds" ...... My swimming pool is nice; virtually every place you go has AC; malls, shopping centers etc encourage folks to come get out of the best - even if they don't buy anything. We consume copious amounts of iced tea (and yes: some use adult beverages as coping mechanisms, even though the benefits are open to debate). Any outside chores are best initiated at daybreak if at all possible, but again, we are acclimated to the heat. What about the A: drive it! Coolant is a 50/50 mix, and I use a bottle of water-wetter (some disagree, but works for me!).

I grew up in Portland and that is definitely a record. I see that PDX has a forecast of even hotter tomorrow! On the East side of the Cascades, our heat is coming Tuesday.

Like you, Ray, my Model A is in the garage, although a few of us met for breakfast this morning in our A's. My 29 Tudor with a new radiator runs very well in triple digits. It's just hotter than a firecracker to ride in and would be pretty miserable on a longer tour in this weather. Normally late July and early August are our hot times!

I too wonder what the folks in the hotter parts of the country do when it comes to working on the cars in triple digit temps. Maybe you folks have A/C in the garage.

I like a bottle of Bombay Sapphire. Some disagree, but it works for me.

Same high temperature is forecasted for Seattle on Monday
as where I stopped for the day in California.

I am headed up there to drop off a pair of VW’s.

We get those temp’s all the time in Inland Southern Cal. If it’s 100 to 110, we drive before 11 am and after 5 pm when it cools down to the low 90’s.

My wife and I grew up here when we didn’t have air conditioning in our houses much less in our cars until the 1970’s so we’re accustomed to it. People here in the U.S. need to adopt the custom of staying out the sun between 12 noon and 4 pm like they do in Southern Europe.

We live in the Tucson area and since retirement I have adapted to the schedule of the locals. Get it done before ten AM. Eat a big lunch, take an hour nap and then wait for the sun to go down to enjoy a beautiful sunset.
Since we have been generous enough to share the heat please send down some of that all day long drizzle of rain for a few days. It is what is referred to as monsoon season here so we get scattered downpours (PLEASE GOD)
Stay safe and take a drive over to the coast and put your feet in that 55 degree Pacific... Chap

Livescience.com had an article the other day about 118 degrees in Siberia on June 20. If I understood the article correctly, that was ground temperature but the air temp was 87. But this is in the Arctic circle.

Yes, I agree, hot is hot, but at least you don't have the humidity.

We put a Mitsubishi Mini-Split ductless air conditioner in the garage a couple of years ago.

Wow what a difference and it is very quiet and very cheap to run. Uses the same amount of electricity as a 60W light bulb. Not only cooled the garage (fully insulated and finished) but of course it dehumidifies it too.

On the really hot days we just leave the old cars inside and don't take them out or open the door.

T-stat set on 72 actually feels kind of cold in there, and that AC unit hardly runs I wouldn't be without one again. I was out in that garage today working on the A and it is a treat not sweating your butt off like in the old days.

I did a Model A temperature stress test today. 109 degrees ambient. Relatively constant 45 mph for 15 minutes. 50/50 antifreeze, no thermostat, Brassworks radiator, stock drivetrain with no overdrive. About 1,000 feet elevation. The driver (me) just about melted. The car did fine.

Normally the temp gauge reads 165-170 under these conditions. Today it quickly came up to the 180 degree mark, but during the whole drive, it really didn't move off the 180 degree mark; not higher and a teensy lower on a long downhill stretch. It seems to be doing pretty well.

The whole Pacific Northwest is under the influence of this system. We in SE Washington State are targeted for 114 on Tuesday. Whew.

I have a Brassworks radiator on my coupe, and I can testify it is a great product. I have never had an overheating problem in over seven years. I didn’t take my As out today because it’s 109 right now, but I am confident that if I did they would perform well with that radiator. If you’re considering upgrading your cooling system, put Brassworks in your budget.

Ray
Make sure you drink plenty of water, it really helps us old guys. Then chase it with a G&T.

Carry at least one banana to wipe the sweat from your brow and eyes. Drink lots of water, pee a lot, get it done early or late. That's what we do in Texas, but a cold snap is on, gonna be upper 80s all week. Gotta get the Fordor out for breakfast.

I always carry a banana in my back pocket and one in my spare parts box.

The key is to have a good radiator. It will probably not overheat even at that temperature.

RE "sun between 12 noon and 4 pm like" problem with that is the temperature had not even peaked by 4, it was still going up! While parts of the county are use to this kind of heat, we are not, esp in June. There are a lot of people that don't have AC that normally would only be needed for a week or two. I was joking to myself about not needing a water heater for my upstairs bathroom! Joke was on me when I almost burnt my hand when I turned the cold water on!

While it was still cool went to breakfast yesterday early. Took the T which has a marginal radiator at best and cools ok on normal days, not so much this trip. The motometer red was in the circle after just a couple of miles.
Currently here At 9:30 am:
Humidity 41 % and 91 Deg's.
