Valve timing on a '35 engine

Hi all,

Quick question regarding the valve timing on a '35 engine. Years ago I had the engine rebuilt in my Grandfathers '34. It's never run quite right since it came back. My father and I brought (drove) it back to the shop that did the engine to have him look (listen) to it. He thinks that the timing between the camshaft and crankshaft are off. I know I checked the marks on both pulleys and they were correct, but what are the chances that the gear is pressed on incorrectly? I did a search regarding timing gears, but didn't come across any photos of how they are supposed to look. What is the valve timing for these engines? The plan is to take a degree wheel to the crank and see where the valves are opening and closing.

quick and easy check is to have in and ex valves both off their seats same amount with piston at TDC
yes, I have experienced the camgear slipping on the camshaft with these engines. Now, after verifying correct valve timing, I drill and tap and fit a grubscrew [scotch key] on the seam between these two components to prevent gear ever moving.

This is a picture of the index marks on the cam gear and cam shaft on my 1935 Phaeton. Not easy to see if you don't know what you are looking for. I learned the hard way. My engine rebuilder had an apprentice reassemble the engine and he totally screwed up the cam gear cam shaft assembly. Of course the engine did not run. Not easy to fix either!

Has anyone heard of the timing marks not being in the correct location? My engine guy wants to degree the camshaft to make sure everything is copacetic, but I haven't found much for the actual valve timing BTDC.

Have you a photo of the nose of your camshaft? That will identify somewhat, which cam is fitted to your engine. Then I can give you valve timing
Has your 'engine guy' verified timing using the split overlap method I mentioned in my first reply?

I should be able to get a few photos in the next few days. I just reread your first post, I will mention that to the engine guy. I still have to take the engine out of the truck, but I'm hoping I can do that tomorrow.

The quick way to tell is the split overlap method that Brian suggested.

The camshaft, valve timing on 1936 and earlier engines, is:
In 9.5/54.5
Ex 57.5/6.5

I believe the above numbers pertain to pre 34 engines with steel camshafts. In 1935 Ford introduced cast iron camshafts and 'detuned' them somewhat to suit the bigger, heavier bodies.
