Default '37 trans and diff oil?

What oil do y'all recommend for the transmission and differential in my '37 pickup? I never knew that some gear lubes could attack bronze and brass parts.

Something labeled "GL4" to save the brass synchros in the trans. Works fine in the rear, also. DD

Need to avoid GL-5. Both O'Reilley and Advance Auto have trans oil labeled for synchromesh transmissions. I used one from Pennzoil labeled Synchromesh. It is said to be for Chrysler and GM transmissions and meets API GL-3 performance.

The real axle can use about any common gear lubricant. The transmission should have mild EP due to all the bushings, thrust washer, and blocker rings made of what is referred to as yellow metals. GL-4 rated is the easiest to get in the lower EP range. GL-3 is what was used back in the day and GL-4 is the modern replacement. Truth be known, you can run SAE 50 motor oil in a transmission since it has the same basic viscosity as SAE 90 gear lube.

GL-4 for sure. I use StaLube 140 in rear and their 85-90 for tranny to help sincros shift smoother in cold weather. I also use the 85-90 in my fan hub. Although available at my local NAPA, I buy both from Amazon; better price and free shipping.
