I don’t know what the rules are for this site, but somehow we should be able to contribute to Tom to help. We owe him a lot.

That's horrible news, you can see Tom's '28 Phaeton in the driveway in the video, what a loss, but thank God, no one was hurt. He restored two powerhouse generators for me about 10 years back, we should do something to help.

That’s just horrible news…..Tom has been such a helpful friend here for a long time, but sadly absent the past couple of years. Thank goodness no one was hurt, but with no insurance it’s going to be tough to recover.

I was just thinking of a go fund me page as well. I have never done one.

So, if anyone is familiar with setting it up, please do, so that we can help out Tom.

I find it hard to believe that he did not have insurance though.

He apparently emailed Mitch at VFF to confirm the fire and that the house and cars were not insured. I’m gonna wait on a GoFundMe until there’s one that Tom officially blesses.

I can honestly say I know what he is going through. It happened to me just over a year ago,on March 7.Lost everything in the fire, including one A,all my motorcycles, and my cellar full of A parts.Losing the dogs made all that crap seem unimportant though.

If we are asking people to open up their checkbooks you damn well better judge whether this is actually a good idea or not.

For the sake of argument what if you were to find out the reason Tom doesn't have insurance is because he self insured. Turns out, he owns numerous properties, a Gulfstream, and has a net worth of 20 million dollars. His annual interest income stream alone is greater than your net worth. How charitable are you feeling now?

Yeah yeah, I know that probably isn't the case here, but, I don't know that. Be careful out there folks. Just sayin'.

well my reaction is- if you want to be dam cynical about everything in life-then go away. Give to Tom to help a brother out and be glad youre not in his situation. It could be YOU.

btw- ever wonder why people like Tom dont visit this site that often? you answered your own bitter question. Nobody is asking you to mortgage your first born..........

I’m 110% in agreement! Come on naysayers think about what you’re saying.
Insurance or not is not the issue. If you think you’re “insured” better read policy. Cars are cars and have to be named assets and insured as autos. Auto parts and a lot of tools and equipment are NOT under home owners and likely have to be a rider or under garage keepers
This whole thing is about caring and helping another individual. Are all you naysayers listening in church or bothering to go?

Crankster,

When you make statements like that on a public forum you should also state where you got the information. How do you know what his assets are? How do you know what his net worth is, much less what his income stream is? As you stated, “just being careful” goes both ways on the internet.

The video I saw shows Tom's place is not in a millionaire's neighborhood. Doesn't matter, it's still a big bite for any millionaire. Donate. Tom's worth it.

You can increase your credibility substantially by deleting your post. As you can see people are vehemently opposed to your unsubstantiated remarks. Post is considered by many to be very ignorant.

I have known Tom for over 20 years, we are both members of the Model A Club in The Twin Cities. I have spoken to him twice since the fire. He sounds devistated. He needs all the kind words and yes financial support we can muster.

He is always giving…never asks for anything in return.
Good day!

We have raised a significant amount already... Some stupid comments ...YES but the vast majority have spoken in actions not words. Let those who understand life continue to be charitable and unquestioning in our faith in God and in each other. I never met Tom but read his welcome to me 7 years ago when I posted question ONE, post ONE. I'm glad I was able to offer something to him, and as I watch the Go Fund Me when I have more come July 1st I'll offer more too, because I believe in my fellow man. I believe in "old car guys (gals)" I believe we need each other now more than ever.

Perhaps there is something positive that can come out of this; which is a lesson to all of us of the value and need for insurance on our automobiles, dwellings and possessions.

Crankster your post is the exact reason I don`t frequent this site anymore, Too many who attack rather than scroll by. I`m so glad I found a friendly site for my model A questions. When I would come to this site with a question I would always look for Toms posts. I feel he unknowingly has helped me out many times, So helping him when he needs it is a no brainer. I know I`m a hypocrite for not just scrolling by. Sorry for that.

Skimmer Bob, your thoughts are right on. '... helping him when he needs it is a no brainer.'

There are too many people who find it too easy to complain. Though the Internet format is a useful one to communicate and share ideas, it also is a platform for those who attack, complain and drag others down. Many cowards find bravery when it is done in an anonymous way.

I donated a bit to Tom not carrying about whether he had insurance or not or by how much money he has in the bank. None of that matters. He is a man who has freely shared his skills and ideas and fate has hit him hard. When a friend is hurt you don't think about anything else but to help him up.

Ruth, I corrected it and it now works. Thanks for pointing that out.

I got the incorrect one from the "Go Fund me page for Tom Wesenberg" thread. When I tried it from that thread, even though I saw that it was different, it worked. I may have copied it incorrectly. The corrected one below works:

I learned about this last week from Mark when he contacted me privately while I was in Indiana and away from my computer. Like Dean said, it definitely made me feel like throwing up from a blow to the stomach.

I thought about this quite a bit while driving home. My take on this is maybe different than some newer guys simply because like a few others, we have known Tom for many years and know his heart and character. Tom never appeared to me to be someone that selfishly coveted 'things' or took advantage of anyone to gain something. He collected things because he likely had a connection in some way to that item. Tom was always one that gave away more than he kept, -especially if that person was in a bind or had a need. One of the most valued commodities that Tom had IMO was 'Problem Solving', ...and then 'Friends' being a close second to the first. Tom freely shared his wisdom to all those who wanted it, -and he always showed patience to those who didn't understand. I am most thankful that Tom did not lose his ability to work with his hands nor did he lose his friends in this fire!

So I guess my immediate thoughts are that to Tom, money was probably not as valuable to him as was his tools. I definitely agree that for the short-term he needs cash money to buy necessities to sustain himself, and so we all need to give something (-me included), ...but inclusive of that I also am going to suggest we (-me included) look around our shops/garages/sheds for spare tools and equipment that we can gift to him. I am sure someone has an old metal lathe they are no longer using, -or maybe a drill press, or a milling machine, maybe an air compressor, a welder, a jack, or some 'tool thing' that is sitting in the corner gathering dust that could be gifted to him. Even if that 'gift' doesn't work any longer, knowing Tom how we know Tom, if he has some tools, he can likely make it work again. And, if so these are all items that he can use to make a way again for himself. Even later on after he is on his feet again, think about sending him a spare starter, generator, -or some Model-A part that he can refurbish for you, -or maybe something he can restore and sell to someone else would likely be a great boost to his recovery. Again, Tom has been a huge asset to this forum, and to the hobby itself, ...and any thing we/you can do, -no matter how insignificant it may seem to you would likely significantly improve his situation in his future!!

Brent, though your heart is in the right place, donating items is something that should only proceed when Tom is back on his feet and he decides what he wants to do. It may be that he wants to go in a different direction with his life. Also, some tool donations might not be the type of items that he would choose for himself. We all have a different definition of a workshop.

Now there may be a time when Tom is open to that and he could work out the details but right now I would suggest that we all consider throwing in a few bucks if we can. Let's help him get back on his feet first.

Here's the Go Fund Me page.

I'm an 11 year member of Ford Barn and have been in the hobby for nearly 50 years. I enjoy reading the many requests for advice and benefiting from the wealth of knowledge in the responses. Since I rarely post, I have not directly conversed with many of you, including Tom, but I know he is a respected and valued member of the Model A community. My heart goes out to him and his wife. Thanks to those of you who have set up the relief fund for Tom. I have just contributed to the effort and will do so again. Hope that the response will far surpass the goal. It will take that and much more to get him back on his feet. Encouraging all to give until it hurts.

Hey jg61hawk , wherebouts in Central NJ ? My last address was in Jackson, Ocean, NJ. I couldn't take all the politics, regulations, and most of all, The taxes. So I bailed! now I'm
over here in Pa. (Jersey Lite) I don't miss it a bit!

About "Go fund me". I'm paranoid! There I said it! But not a single number or a letter of my Credit Cards are on my computer. I have a Apple and I've still got a virus, maybe more than one, I don't know! I do not trust this thing and I wish people would stop putting all their faith in these things (Can you say "Colonial Pipeline"?) They are basically flawed! They will bite us in the ass when we can stand it the least. They are too vulnerable! I've had my CC (visa) hacked three times, once from Australia! And that was with only a Telephone. Computers are not reliable! First it was my picture program, Gone! Then it's other little important things. Now I only put things on here that it's not important if they get hacked or not. Critical things like any banking numbers or CC numbers are kept far away from here.

If some of you guys would READ FOR CONTENT instead of screeching like wounded eagles....

I suppose, if I'd actually said what some of you think I said, you might have a point.

It works in Chrome for me. One thing you can try in Chrome is to open the page in an Incognito window; this disables any local browser extensions that may be screwing up the site.

Ronn,
Incognito allows you to browse a site without leaving Cookies.
Simply open a the browser go to the drop down settings menu and it should come up with open in incognito just click on it. I won't say what most people do with it but it won't leave a search trail.

Additional definition.

What Is Incognito Mode in Win 10 Chrome?

Incognito is the private browsing mode in Chrome. When you use it, Chrome doesn't locally store your browsing history, cookies, site data, or any information you type in forms between sessions. A session ends when you close all open Chrome windows.

Amazing and typical on this site...We have a go fund me page for a man that has done so much for so many and now we're talking about "incognito" mode on a computer. MY Gosh people, sorry to be so harsh but can we keep the focus on the subject. I am talking with Tom constantly and he is beyond grateful for the love and support from those that have helped ....Tom needs money to survive right now. At this time he does not need parts to repair...Is a great idea in the future of course but not now. He has saved his tools and many parts but now needs to get a place to live and do the work.. Let's keep helping him. For what he has done for so many people everyone can open that wallet for $10.00.....time to let the moth balls out. IF you don't want to do the go fund me which is perfectly SAFE...then send me a PM and it can be sent to me directly....Thank you to everyone so far that has donated.

Mark,
I'm sorry you had to be harsh also, the comment about incognito mode was to allow him to make a donation to the subject at hand and for no other reason. We all understand exactly what is at stake here.

I want to thank everyone for your support. It means a lot to Marilee and me. We are engaged, but not married yet. Since the fire everything is on hold until we can get back on our feet. We got a bank loan to buy a trailer house 150 miles north of here, and luckily it has a couple storage buildings so I can house some of what can be saved. Most all of my homemade Model A tools are gone as well as many of my Model A parts, but I can save some and will have to restore them again.
I'll be working on making EVR's and restoring generators after we get settled in and squared away.
I didn't have any of my antique cars insured because I wasn't driving any of them since covid hit. After my mother passed away the house insurance more than doubled, so foolishly I let it lapse.
This has been the hottest summer I can remember, and it takes so much out of a person that it slows the progress on moving what I can save to up north. The city wants the house cleared as soon as possible. Today I asked for a 3 week extension so I can save more parts that I had in the basement.
Within a month or two I will have to line up a buyer and set a timeline for final demolishment and cleanup. It's very physically and mentally taxing, but I will stay with it as long as I can. I think my 29 Tudor can be saved, but it's still blocked by heavy debris in front of it. For some reason I can't post pictures here like I used to.
Thanks Again, Tom

What makes you think that it's a responsibility?
Be careful what you say, the big brother government might hear what you say and make it mandatory.

Absolutely. X2

The insurance company was really putting it to Tom. Big time. He told me what they were doing to him on his house several years ago when we spoke up at Ken Ehrenhofer's at the Model A swap meet.

An attorney that taught Business Law classes I was in at school in the early 70's hammered into our heads many times, and I'll never forget him, 'The Insurance Company is NOT your friend so get that out of your heads.'

Exactly, they just raised my new premium over $300 because of the high cost of lumber, is their reason.

Like Tom said, I never saw THAT one coming either.

But in today's news they just said that lumber is back to 2018 prices and will drop another 28% by December. Is the Ins. Co. going to give you a refund for THAT difference it ought to work both ways??

I just received my annual homeowners insurance renewal with AAA, and my premium was within a few dollars of last years…..they certainly did not raise it due to higher lumber or other costs.
