Spare tire carrier
I was planning on using the original style underbody tire carrier on my 51.
However, I cannot locate the J hook anywhere. Does someone know where they can be located? Also concerned if I go with wider wheels than the originals will the tire even fit? Would really appreciate to know what others have done. |

Re: Spare tire carrier
Why would you need to go a wider wheel for the spare? A spare is only used in an emergency until you either get a new tire or repair the one that went flat. Just use a stock wheel and tire. Nobody sees it anyway under the bed.

Re: Spare tire carrier
You don't say if your truck is a F-1 or F-2,3 series. F-1 had 2 brackets on the frame that acted as a swivel and the 2 "bolts" had an eye at the top with a clevis pin thru it and a special threaded nut at the bottom. The only part reproduced is the carrier itself.
The F-2,3 used completely different setup and the 2 long bolts were actually curved to clear the tire. You should get a parts catalog because it shows the carriers and the correct parts needed. There is some of this stuff out there NOS, but you need the correct part numbers to search for it. You can also look on Ebay, as it comes up from time to time.

Re: Spare tire carrier
Back in August 23, 2014, I posted (in the Early V8 forum) a thread on how to fabricate the special hanger bolts for early F1 trucks.
Maybe you'd like to check it out. It is called "Fabricate spare bracket hanger bolts for '48 -'52 F1." |
