Off topic. Remember TV show Columbo?
Sorry, at my age TV occupies much of my time. I always enjoyed watching Columbo, never got tired of his low-brow character outsmarting high society criminals. Well, he’s back. Only now he’s a she and she goes by the name Elsbeth, who’s mode of transportation is a NY tour bus rather than Columbo’s 1959 Peugeot ragtop. Sadly, she doesn’t smoke a stogie either.

Great show. The crook always thinks he's onto a winner when Columbo walks away, but then he stops and turns and asks that one question that causes the offender to "choke on his Weaties" and it all unravels from there.

I liked that it always looked like he slept in his clothes. He was rumpled, when rumpled wasn't cool.

I actually drove a Peugeot 403 my last year in high school ('64-'65), a sedan (not a ragtop)-nice little car when it ran, albeit gutless. 4 on the tree, sunroof. Definitely the oddball car at my school.

I remember he drove it like a baby, parked on the grass, and it sputtered and smoked.

Columbo was a great show. I now get old Perry Mason reruns and there are lots of mid to late 50's Fords on those shows.

Columbo's never-seen but often referenced wife.

Re: Off topic. Remember TV show Columbo?
Alan,
You missed your opportunity back in 1984. Universal Studios offered the Columbo car for sale back then according to the story. You can read all about it in the June 2024 issue of Hemmings Classic Car. |

Re: Off topic. Remember TV show Columbo?
Bruce, good to see you posting here. Not an every day occurance!
Back in 1984, I was just getting back on my feet after a major career change. No spare change available for exotic beaters like that. But then, I did cry a lot for losing my auction bids on Utility Company (PGE) post war Ford pickup trucks about that time.
