Model A Paint Codes
I'm sure this question has been asked 3 Million times!
We're not having much luck matching colors by scanner, and want to keep the original colors. If somebody has a good relatively current paint code, we'd surely appreciate it 1930 Pickup ROCK MOSS GREEN 1930 Roadster KEWANEE GREEN Thanks for your help! Re:'Rock Moss Green'
GBGH,
I have access to a collection of large sized Model A era paint chips from which I scanned 'Rock Moss Green', using PPG equipment. The chip received a #4 rating to a modern Ford color 'Amazon Green', OEM Code M6965D, PPG Code #48750. Please understand that most Model A color formulas have drifted from the original to 'muddy' versions. You should be able to purchase a 3 ounce sample, do a spray out and review. Now if someone has a formula for late 1929 Mountain Brown, I'm interested. JB |

Re: Model A Paint Codes
Automotive paint has evolved so much that formulas are nearly useless. When the paint chemistry changes so does the mixing components. I think that matching is the only way now days using the old or newer chip books. New paints will never look like original lacquer with all of that Deep gloss. Solution: have small amounts mixed and shoot it to see if you like it. modify to make it better, then paint.

Re: Model A Paint Codes
Try TCP global in Southern Cal. They can mix acryl lacquer, acrylic enamel or the modern stuff and send you brush outs depending on paint allowed by the EPA in your area. Better yet, if you send an orig. old small part, they (supposedly) still can color match by eye and will return the part with samples.

Re: 'Rock Moss Green'
Hah!
You feel my pain! I know both vehicles have been repainted, to 'original' at some point and it's a roll of the dice on color match, but, hopefully this will be a little closer. Many Thanks! |

Re: So Sorry....
GBGH,
I didn't realize you were attempting to match existing colors. Skip my formula, it will only work with a new, complete repaint. Take a piece from each vehicle to your paint store to have scanned & matched. That is the best approach as others have suggested. Good Luck |

Re: Model A Paint Codes
They are both listed on this chart from MAFCA. Hope this helps.

Re: 'Rock Moss Green'
jb-ob, any headway on Mountain Brown? I have finally concluded my 29 Tudor was the Mountain brown/thorne brown combination. I have not found any car pictures of this combination and I have noticed tremendous color variation of the posted mountain brown chip colors. I have not yet tackled the color standards book.

Re: 'Mountain Brown'
RC,
As you might know Mountain Brown with Thorne Brown was a late (offered in October) 1929 body color combination. PPG does not list a paint code for Mountain Brown and since browns in general are not popular colors, PPG's scan computer does not offer good options either. Compared to my original 1929 Acme Mountain Brown chip, I would GUESS (my conclusion) Mountain Brown returned in 1932 as 'Winterleaf Brown'. I would start a new thread with the heading 'Mountain Brown' and see if someone can help with a formula they used. Best, jb |

Re: 'More Mountain Brown'
From 'Ford Motor Company Material Numbers'
09-09-29 M-929 Mountain Brown (Dark) Pyroxylin One month later listing.. 10-08-29 M-968 Winterleaf Brown (Dark) Pyroxylin 10-08-29 M-969 Winterleaf Brown (light) Pyroxylin Winterleaf Browns are generally associated with 1932 Fords. Without lists of tints used to compare, I can only suggest Mountain Brown & Winterleaf Brown Light LOOK very close. Hope this is helpful, jb |

Re: Model A Paint Codes
Thanks Mike.
I have that list from the original source and have made a spray out of their Mountain Brown. Compared to my original 1929 chip, kinda like home plate & out field. While brown colors might have been popular in the Model A era, not so today, making available useable samples almost impossible....but I enjoy the challenge. |

Re: Model A Paint Codes
PPG still had a code for Andalusite Blue for my 29 cabriolet. I used that as a starting point. They gave me a printout of the formula for the paint system I was using. I got a small amount and had it sprayed on a sheet metal panel. I ended up shooting four slight color variations on panels. Under most light conditions they all look the same as the original PPG formula, but I picked the formula I liked best. i pulled out a little of both black and crimson tinted pigments.
Check in with the mayor paint manufacturers and see if they have the codes for your original color. i knew mine because my dad was original purchaser of the car when new. ...and i had a few undisturbed original spots i found when taking the car apart, as behind the original data plate on gas tank. |

Re: Model A Paint Codes
I used TCP Global when I refinished a set of wheels for a 1970 Chevrolet Z/28. and it matched perfectly including the amount of flatness. I spent over $600.00 in paint prior to going to TCP Global. I had previously used PPG, DuPont and several spray can colors sold by supply houses with no luck. Try them, I wish that I had found them first....
